Those are really nice for sanding contours...they can go harder if you run them one way...and softer the other...

They are commonly used in lapidary work. Thus, searching for lapidary expanding wheels will yield many websites. They come in 6 and 8 inch wheels I believe. You can get very fine grit belts for them as well. I think even leather and cork.
 
I have one of those, they are suppose to turn at less than 1600 rpm to be safe. the biggest problems is the belts are really expensive and dont last very long. I don.t use it for steel anymore.
