Anyone used the "Johnny Wiseman" Parang Survival Knife

Bladefixation, you have a good knife there with the Wiseman. Yes we broke some when they first came out and some of it was testing. I've been told, a year or so ago, that the heat treatment has was improved. The real trouble with using large knives in the UK, as is true in much of the States, is that we end up cutting wood with them. Our wood is tough on any knife but then as its there we just can't resist. Big knife and we want to fell a tree with it. In truth there needs to be plenty of steel to take this kind of punishment which translates into a very heavy blade or axe head. Cut logs with anything nicely weighted and you are going to have some problems.

The Americans enjoy good value on their blades which puts the Wiseman in the semi custom area. The Wiseman ought to be $220 and then it would be great value and compare well with the competition.

Hi Bagheera

I came across an Austrialian site http://www.akc.iinet.net.au/knives.html#golok-java
whilst trolling through some of the archives here. They offer a Parang and a Golock both from Java, which seem to be very close to the Parang shown in Lofty's book and at 79.00Aus$ for the Parang and 89.00Aus$ for the Golok they look like good value. Let me know if you get your hands on one.

You can get a few Martindale´s and the Jungle Issue knife at wwww.penrithsurvival.co.uk and they are very cheap there.

Hi,

Thanks guys for the tips, Jaime I (we) already have a couple of Jungle Knives from Martindale and they are great, I even made a leather sheath for one (my personal one) but it still needs to get finished.
These Jungle knives can be sharpened easily and are great choppers, I even tested one chopping up up to 4" diameter beechwood that was cut and had dried already a little. The Jungle knife stayed sharp, cut like crazy.

The Survival Golok and Parang look nice I've read very positive posts about them and for the price they probably can't be beat.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

I've got the Parang. I haven't used it much, since I find the tip-heavy configuration difficult to control to my satisfaction. Jimbo is right about parangs and their potential. They cut through green stuff and keep moving.

If you go this route, I wouldn't recommend the leather sheath that they offer. Go with the traditional wood scabbard. Also, you'll probably want to modify the handle, which is very thick.

That said, I'd love to hear from anyone who's done serious work with the Parang of Java and how it compares to Valiant Co.'s Standard Parang (my guess is that they're made by the same folks - they certainly look identical).

I REALLY like that knife! Very well thought out. I gather the grind is flat, becoming convex as it nears the edge? Nice!

I also appreciate N2S's comment about using your head. :)
