Anyone using EDM stones for finishing? What's your technique?

I've heard from a few people that EDM stones were much faster for finishing than sandpaper, so I decided to give them a shot.

Just bought a good range of 'Orange EDM' stones from MoldShopTools.com and now have to work out the best way to use them!

Do you guys normally lie them down and use them like a sanding stick? Use them on end like the mold guys would?

Any suggestions and experiences welcomed!

I shape the end with a file to more or less match my work piece, keep it wet with WD40 and scrub my tool marks out moving to 600 grit stone, then on to paper.

The advantage of stones over paper is accuracy and speed with less rounding over of detail. The strategies used, such as changing direction and getting out all previous marks are similar.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable such as David Wesner might chime in.

I just pulled mine out again to do some sanding in the plunge line, I wanted to get faster removal of some deep scratches and more control, worked really well. I have used them for general sanding and although convient I break them ofter and the small pieces are hard to work with. I need to get some of their stone handles and see how that works.

I like them a lot for kitchen knives but my technique is nothing special... I like to lay them length ways or sideways on the bevel and "draw file." After that I move to waterstones.

They are nice to have around the shop and a good buy too.
