I plan to buy 1 decent fixed blade this year. I'm looking at a $150ish price range.

The theme I'm after is; ruggedly built, field grade, and scary looking

(it won't be used much, if ever)

Right now I'm eyeing the Camillus CQB-1.
Any suggestions???????????????????????????

I was just going to suggest that knife! I've been eyeballing it myself. Definitely a fighting/utility blade (not dedicated to either) but wicked looking and what appears to be one of the best sheaths that comw tih a production fixed blade.

You can get an RTAK (Newt Livesay) for 150, or maybe one of this spear point fighting utility blades (101'st, or 82nd airborne ones) that fit your intended purpose.

In my latest COld Steel special projects catalog you could get a factory second trailmaster bowie that COMES WITH BLACK EPOXY COAT for around that price!

Then ofcourse there are the customs. If you don't mind waiting, go to the links page and peruse the custom maker pages for ideas, but you will have to wait, unless you want a dropped point hunter that is handmade and ready for shipping in which case I'd suggest calling L6STEEL (Mike Cooper) as he can hook you up, with a kick butt leather sheath too.

Newt Livesay definatly has rugged field grade knives. I'd suggest the Air Assualt or Company Knife. I think Newt would be offended if you didn't use the knives though

A few clarifying questions and you'll get some good advice off this board:

1. Carbon Steel ok? ... or do you want the ease of maintenance of a stainless range steel?

2. Approximate length that is of interest: 6", 8", 10, 12", etc. I find all but the best constructed of 12" knives (read distal taper & ABS) to be a bit unwieldy.

3. Do you like double guards? True "fighters" have double guards, but I don't get in many knife fights, so for field use, I don't care for the top guard at all.

4. Do you care about balance? Weight? Or is a big hunk of 1/4" full tang acceptable?

5. How will you carry? In a pickup? Stays at home? On your belt (see "weight" question above).

Thanks for the advice so far guys, keep it coming!
To answer the questions:
1. I prefer higher end steels like ATS-34, or 154CM but I'm open minded.
2. As for blade length, I was thinking from 4 - 8 inches.
3. "IF" it's ever carried, it would be in my P/U truck. (weight is not an issue).

Mainly I'm after a sleek looking knife that "could" do the job if needed.

My 2 cents.......

How about a Buck Intrepid. You can get a tanto or blunt tip. It has a chopping edge on the spine, straight edge with Kit Carson scalloped serrations and is A PIECE OF STEEL! Also look at BKT BRUTE. I love ATS-34 but not in a large blade. Most big blades will be choppers, diggers, or pry bars at some point if they are used. ATS-34 is not tough enough, it chips. Remember slightly softer steel is tougher. Be careful out there!

They aren't scary looking but some of Bob Doziers straight knives in D2 are probably some of the best buys in a tough, using knife for field use.

The CQB1 is a great choice, as is a Busse Combat Basic 5, and also the Dozier Arkansas Toothpick.There are many more great ones out there in your price and spec range. Have fun!

I agree with some of the above posts. Check out Newt's stuff. Namely the US Marshall (bigger than it looks in the pictures!), Air Assault, or ICU. If you gotta have something in the "big" range, go with the HKR or RTAK.

I agree with the Dozier and Busse comments above. Dozier's are awesome values in using knives, and Busse's are nuclear tough. Either would do you proud.

Allen Blade makes some really great knives. You get a lot of bang for the buck in a "custom" knife with him.

A Ka-bar D2 Impact, Gerber Yari, or Camillus CQB-1 are all good contenders for reaonably priced good quality factory knives. Street price on all of these should fit your budget. You might also want to consider the Becker line.

A nice AllenBlade Combat Patrol Bowie in the 9 to 13 inch range would be a great display and Pickup knife.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

Forget it. Buy yourself a Fallkniven A1.
I have a Satin model, and it is the BEST! That VG-10 steel is awesome.

1. ATS-34/154CM/VG-10/440C
2. 4-8" is a wide range.
3. Stout and pointy.

Here is some good stuff, roughly in the order in which I'd rank it. There is lots of cr@ppy stuff out there. Caveat Emptor.

www.dozierknives.com
====================
Dozier Elk Hunter: 5" or 5-3/4". $165-$175.
Dozier Pro Guide: 4-3/4". $165.

Dozier's stuff is a bargain, semi-custom, superduper D2 heat treat.

http://www.fallkniven.com/next-index.htm
========================================
Fallkniven A1: 6.3"
Fallkniven S1: 5.1"
Fallkniven F1: 4"

Fallkniven goes for $80-$100 on up a bit. Very cost effective. Great quality and very good steel for the money and good clean useful, no-frills designs.

http://www.mullin-custom-knives.com/prkco.html
==========================
Steve Mullin's Pack River 7" Camp Knife in D2 is a simple looking design that I must own... but he's not taking orders until September time frame. This is a gem at $175. A truly useful "user" and not a "fighter", but thought I'd throw it in.

http://www.benchmade.com/detail.asp?id=663062869111&item=6
==================
Nimravus: 4.5". $155 MSRP, lots less used.

Good clean design from Elischewitz for a change (harkens back to his earlier, less flashy days and clean fixed fighter designs, all long gone).

www.sogknives.com
==================
SOG Trident Bowie: 6.25", one of few they make in 440C, sexy Bowie grind. Skip all their 440A stuff.

http://www.camillusknives.com/Cuda-cqb.htm
===========================================
Camillus CQB1: 5-3/4" $130.

Good knife, EXCEPT it needs a swell or drop at handle butt.

http://www.ka-bar.com/cgi-bin/product_index.cgi
======================
I don't care for the overall Ka-bar look that much, but many do, you might too. Get the 7" D2 Extreme/Fighting version. MSRP is $163 w/ leather sheath, street price should be $100 or so (?).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And if you really might need to "do the job" sometime, I'm really in favor of 12ga in buckshot or 185-230gr hollowpoints in .45acp over a knife. With tritium.
C'mon, Classified!!
As much as you hang out at the Benchmade forum, isn't your choice, obvious??
biggrin.gif
Seriously, I'd go with either the Camillus CQB-1, or the Nimravus in ATS-34. Either one is a great choice.
You could consider a custom from Allen Blade, also. As stated above, he makes quality stuff, for not a lot of bucks.
Mike
GenO Denning makes some outstanding knives at very reasonable prices. They are ATS-34 and he makes all the pins and guards out of stainless steel. The handle options include Micarta. They are very tough knives. Check them out at www.cavemanengineering.com
Brent,
If you are concidering the CQB, I would also take a look at the gerber Yari. In my honest opinion the Yari fits the hand much better than the CQB and looks nicer. Plus, it is a heck of a lot cheaper in cost. My price for the Yari is $75.00.
The Benchmade Nimravus seems to be a good choice also. It is very popular here as a defensive knife.
Also check out Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works for the toughest beat a$$ knives around. They are hand made and you can even customize your knife. The wait is only about 2 weeks or so.
Thats where I got this bad boy:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1431048&a=10724144&p=37145586
16" diferentially tempered 5160 blade, 11" handle with black Micarta scales.
Sturdiest knife I have ever seen. You can't go wrong with one of their knives and to top it off, the customer service is excellent.
