Ok, so my son is old enough now that we can start going camping again. I've sold all my knives except an old Schrade 130T, in fantastic shape BTW, and an original Blind Horse Knives...something. Don't quite remember the model but it's a nice small 2.75" blade in a neck sheath.

That leaves me wanting something new:cool: I'm looking for something that's good at most everything in a camping/woods scenario. So fire starting, food prep, stake making, etc. This is what I'm thinking:

+ Fixed blade, obviously
+ 3.5-4" blade
+ Flat or Sabre/Convex grind
+ 90° spine
+ Carbon steel
+ $150-$200 budget

I've found a few that I like so far but I thought I'd get the expertise of you guys.

LT Wright Maverick Scout- if I get this one I can add a fire steel and still come in at budget.
LT Wright Genesis- not sure if it's too big of a knife...
Smith and Sons Brave-absolutely love the blade and handle profile but I can't find any reviews of it other than a Gideon tactical video.

So, any thought or knives I may need missing?

I'll also add that I've been looking at the Knife Makers for sale area but everything is either too small, hollow grind or way out of my league.

I assume your son is still pretty young. I would consider getting him a Mora Companion and a Victorinox swiss army knife. Another couple that I think are pretty good knives for a youngster is the Fallkniven F1, ESEE 3 or 4, or a Kabar BK-16. I often just carry a BK-15 myself. I don't own any of the LT Wright blades, but I know they are pretty fair knives.

Condor "Kephart" or "Nessmuk"
Carbon steel blades in the length you want.
Under your budget tho, only around $35 - $40 online.
You can get the "Kephart" as a blade blank, and put scales of your choice on.

Sorry guys, I should have been more specific. The knife is for me, not my son. He's only 5 so old enough to go but still a year or two away from his own knife.

The Kephart I own was never much of a cutter new. Per 42-Blades, the edge is too thick and needs to be thinned down a bit to make it a cutter. I like the Condor Two Rivers Skinner as a general purpose fixed blade. Not sure of the edge geometry but it is easy to sharpen to a very sharp edge.

I myself like the KA-BAR MKI or an Ontario 499 Pilot Survival Knife but there is also this.......

Man I was usin knives at that age. Benchmade has some nice fixed blades. Pick up a cheap mora while you're at it and teach him to use it and have him using it every trip then when he's 8 or ten actually give it to him.

There are alot of makers here on blade forums that post just what you want in the knife makers forums at the price you want. Austin Goldman comes to mind as a maker that does carbon steel blades at the sub $150 price.

Production knives, I absolutely love my becker bk 16! Esee are always reliable. If you are willing to wait, some of the survive! Knives can be had for around $200 in 3V.
