Does anyone here have Celiac Disease? If you do or know someone with, how does it affect your outdoors activities? Do you pack anything special for your outings? Any positive input is appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

I have a friend (former employee) with this.

He's been healthy and happy for 11 years since his diagnosis.

So far as I know, he's just extremely careful about what he eats. For wilderness outings, he simply packs what he knows will work.

Mike,

If you haven't already done so, be sure to read the books by Rachel Naomi Remen.

My girl friend has this disease, and she can not eat any thing with gluton in it. But we did find a lot of good stuff and a store called whole foods, itis a little more expensive. But well worth the money so she doesnt get the side effects of this disease, the doc told us to eat a ton of fresh veggies and fruit and lean meats. Hope ths helps

My Sister has it.Everything she eats has to be gluten free or it rips her guts up.Its a lot more common here nowadays. There are many specialist shops around, supermarkets are starting to dedicate aisles or partial aisles to gluten free foods and many cafe's and takeaways now cater for it,at least the smart ones are.I am sure it will be a very lucrative business in the future.
When my Sister goes out she takes nibbles with her, muesli bars, rice wafers, that sort of thing. She makes her own bread for sandwiches. If she buys anything from a shop she reads the complete label,if its a cafe or restaurant she doesn't know she will question the staff thoroughly about how the food was prepared and what is in it,if she is not satisfied she asks for the chef.If she has any doubt at all she wont buy or eat it.One bite of a food with gluten in it is enough for her to start having stomach pain.
She has done a ton of research so now has a good idea of what she can and can't have.Manufacturers are very good at omitting or hiding things on labels,or assigning ingredients numbers instead of names so read everything carefully.
