Anything better than a Delica?

That's debatable as I must have bent the clips 3-4 times on both my Sages and G10 D'fly but never once on any Delica I have owned.

but you have chipped off the paint right? I am curious how you bent the clips so frequently, what did they catch on? honest question so I know to watch out for it. Also my main reason for saying the clip was better is I personally much prefer the lowride style clip.

Good advise...

thank ya

Native 5 is a good choice (S35VN steel). Caly 3/3.5 if you're OK with pinned construction, no washers, and a super-shallow choil. I wasn't, so I no longer own one, but they are good knives.

You might as well just go ahead and buy a Paramilitary-2 because it sounds like you'll end up with one anyways :)

The paint certainly chips. I have went a ahead and stripped a couple clips because it avoids chips and looks nice on many knives. The black clips look nice on some knives but a little out of place on others.

As far as bending the wire clips, it happened on a seatbelt, at work on equipment and once walking by something that snagged on the knife hard. It could happen to any clip but the wire is more susceptible to a bend. Not always a bad thing as a real hard snag might snap a different style clip and the wire can be bent back. I think it's a great clip for any Gent's knife but please Sal don't ever put it on a Paramilitary...

good to know, thanks. the PM2 clip seems a little more resistant to chipping than the delica so I have no problems with that one as is.

I think the Caly 3 is clearly the closest thing in the lineup to a Delica with upscale materials. The cutting edge is nearly identical in profile, and the handle is similar in depth (unlike, say, a Sage). Unless one isn't a fan of the Spydie finger choil, it's the obvious choice.

However, there would also be the option of tracking down an old G10 Delica and swapping in the blade from a current ZDP version.....

Hi Sqoon,

As you (& others) have mentioned, the Delica is pretty hard to beat. More than 20 years of continuous refinement goes a long way. The Caly series has also been evolving for many years.

Hi K9Hadouken,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I can't believe you actually posted this Rab. We will be talking later about this.

Another vote for the Caly 3 or the Sage series. Same size as the Delica, but with the finger choil, it fits your grip like a larger knife (and yet has 2mm more cutting edge). I can't say anything bad about the Delica (in any variant), but it just doesn't fit comfortably in my hand - and my hands aren't that large. But the Caly 3 and Sage series fits me like they were designed especially for me.

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on either a Caly or a Sage. Thanks for all the feedback, gents.

With as much as the Sage and Caly seem to fit the bill for what I am looking for, a huge part of me just wants to leave well enough alone and stick with my Delica. It's not impossible that I've just found the perfect EDC knife for me.

Sal. Any plans for a Delica in S30V? Saber grind with G10, if you are taking orders.

It's a Seki knife, so you're not going to see anything but Japanese steels. Take your pick of VG10 or ZDP. I suppose you could beg for a Super Blue sprint run.

I've felt that the Centefonte III was in some way closely related to the Delica (with a tad thinner blade profile), however this could just be my eye. Also I've found the Stretch to be pretty effecient for a larger knife and this is coming from a guy that tends to gravitate towards smaller (I.E. sub 3 inchs blades) knives.

A Delica in ZDP 189 with a side trip to a professional sharpener like Knifenut or JDavis882 before it gets to you! JDavis882(youtube name) or Crimsontideshooter (BF name) can even polish some of internals to make it smoother if you like (though, I'm not sure if it gets it any smoother than just wearing it in).

For true Delica fans some have imported the Titanium frame/ATS 34 bladed Delica from the Japanese home market. It's a very nice knife! It's a Titanium lockback, not framelock and build quality is excellent.

was tracking that one on the bay. then someone snapped it. meant for the japanese market only, right?

I'd recommend the Stretch. Slightly bigger than the Delica, but it is a very useful blade. The basic VG10/FRN is solid, but you could also pick up the green ZDP-189 version or the carbon fiber ZDP-189 version (this last one is discontinued, but can still be found at some dealers).

There is a long history to the Stretch family dating back to the original Hunter knives in Spyderco's lineup in the early 1990s. Sal has said that he designed the Stretch for himself and it is rumored to be one of his very favorite blades!

The suggestions here have been great. A Titanium Delica?!? I had no idea such a thing existed. Looks amazing. Before pulling the trigger on a ZDP Delica, I'm thinking about trying out two new things in one knife and getting a Dragonfly in ZDP. I'm curious about both the knife and the steel.

The stretch has had my eye for a while. Might have to pick one up instead of an Endura, just to keep some variety.

Manix 2 with the blue transluecent handles. It packs more blade length for about the same weight as the delica. It has the ball bearing lock which I like. At Blade Show this year I handled it and it was very smooth and strong.
