What's up fellas?

The wife and I are taking the baby and the dog to Chincoteague in December. Neither of us have been there before and don't know what to expect. We are really looking forward to getting away for a long weekend.

Have any of you been there and have an recommendations on trails, food, shops, etc? I'd love to get the family out on some trails.

Thanks in advance.

Is that in China????????? Sound like some jungle disease that an elepant got in Brazil after he got bitten by rabid monkey on the ear. Died on top of the mountain and got eating by drunk american on vacation in Australia on a hunt for a comodo(sp) dragon...

NO..........Eastern shore of Virginia........You never heard of the wild ponies of Chincoteauge? :)

Never been there; but is on the Atlantic Ocean side. Good fishing. Not sure what there is to do in December. More of Summer/Fall destination.

Sorry I'm not much help.

I guess I should have specified, but I figure if you know what it is you'll know where it is :)

I think the comment about it being in China was a poor attempt at some humor....

Sorry bro, never been.

But the eastern shore of Virginia in December is probably going to produce some Striped Bass I would think.

Check here.

Edit to say. I hope you have a wonderful time!!!!

That's my plan - I'm going to take some surf rods down and hopefully pull one in the size of Myright Jr :)

I'll make sure to take some pics.

It would be cool if there were some trails to take him out on as well.

It'll be a nice getaway for the off season.

Thanks for the pics, Tony.

Nothing better than a fresh white and flakey fillet of fresh striped bass!

If you go to that link I posted and click activities, then click hiking. It will show you some trails.

December? Oysters! and clams. Not really a good time for crabs.

Not much shaking there in December.
It will be peacful and quiet.

Upside, no skeeters in December.

I hear the skeeters, ticks, and flies are hellatious there in the summer time.

I saw a few different trails on the website that look to be a decent length, but was not able to find any maps so I'll ask some locals when I get down there.

I rode around Chincoteauge and Assoteauge during a motorcycle tour about 30 years ago. Spent several hours there. Lovely place, and probably even nicer in winter time with less people around. My only problem was horse pucky on the road in the curves... Tough on a bike. Lots of horses to be seen all over the island, lots of sea birds to watch, and some delightful beach to walk on. When I was there there weren't many shops or food places. I'm guessing that has changed a bit in 30 years. Just remember that the horses are wild. They are used to people, but don't try to get too close. Have a great trip!

I went to Assateague for a powwow back in 02, Assateague was packed, Ocean City was not. Didn't get really cold, except for one night. Chincoteague is about an hour south of OC in summer traffic. I imagine it would look like your neck of the woods in winter ;). Lots of places open in the summer, boarded up in winter. Can't recommend any of the b and b's, guessing camping won't be on the agenda. Fishing is always good, ask around the bait shops/marinas.

A woman I know has a house down there and we will be staying at her house for the weekend. No, camping is not on the agenda. My boy, at 3 months, may be a bit young to camp with especially in the winter. Depending on the weather I 'm sure he'll be good on the beach for an hour or two so the wife and I can fish.

We are fine with a lot of stuff being boarded up for the winter. We aren't really into crowds and shops, etc. especially this time of year.

If anyone knows where to find some trail maps please let me know. I couldn't find anything online. I know we can find some info when we get down there, but I like to prepare.

Thanks for all the info everyone. You guys are great!

My wife and I used to spend a week there every summer before we had kids, so we haven't been there in over 20 days. I imaging everything has changed. The one thing that sticks out in my mind, which you won't have to worry about this time of year, is the horse flies. I have never seen bigger, meaner, and hungrier horse flies in my life.

Well - I'm down here right now.

I brought a Charlie Ridge knife that I got in a trade not too long ago and my mini-grip. I plan on heading out and getting some pics and seeing what this island has to offer.

Hopefully the weather will be ok. I've got a 4 month old with us so we'll see how long we can head out for.

I just saw this thread and I thought of my brother's trip there and his recollection of the biting critters. Scared me and crossed it off my list for places to go. I'll probably check it out someday, but definitely in the colder seasons like you. Enjoy your trip. Take lots of pics.

I was there once when really young so I don't remember too much. Its a nice little get away area. Not entirely sure if I remember right since I was so young, but it seems similar to Cape Cod. The big tourist attraction is the crossing of the ponies where they all swim the channel between the two islands. I think that takes place in the summer though.

If you have ever seen the movie Misty. The horse they used in the movie is stuffed in a museum.

Have a fun trip!

We just got back from the Wildlife Refuge, but didn't get out of the car as we were not prepared (gear, etc.) we were scoping out some trails for tomorrow. It's pretty cool that there are a lot of wild horses runnig around.

I'll try and get some pics up later, but I probably won't get around to it until Monday when I'm back home.

We are staying in a Cape Cod that a friend of mine owns, it's pretty nice.
