I'm starting to get bored with knives. Aside from different shapes and steels, everything is the same old stuff, just recycled.

Sorry guys. I'm still happy with what's out there.

What would you guys like to see?

I'm with Phil on this. How long have you been collecting, and what is it that initially causes you to purchase a particular knife?

Personally, I have a couple hundred knives in my collection, yet I still can't wait to see what comes next. I continue to be surprised by lots of American, German, and Japanese designers and manufacturers. Innovation seems to be rampant right now, with new lock designs, steel advancements like Kershaws composite blades:thumbup:, affordable damascus, new flipper systems, and lots of cool creativity in the custom market.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but I'm sure it's out there;) Sometimes you just need a short break, and then you can return to your hobby with a renewed vigor.

Cheers,
Jon

Damn Jon, I just got more excited reading your post. I need some more knives dammit!:D.

You're absolutely right. Knives are boring. You should move on to something more exciting and send all those boring knives to me.:D

Knives are like women, no two are the same. The balance is different, they feel different, they work different. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

Actually come to think of it, in some ways they are better than women. You can have multiple knives at the same time without facing bigamy charges. COOL.

Like I said, just send all those boring knives to me.

That's why I'm her Phil.:D I love to light the fire under the collective butt of knife lovers everywhere.

There really is so much great stuff coming out that I hate to hear about any enthusiast thinking that it's just "same stuff, different day". I think we are in the midst of a very great time in the knife world.

I'm starting to get bored with knives.
I've been buying/collecting/accumulating knives for many years. I wouldn't say that I've ever gotten "bored", but I do take breaks from time to time to focus more on other hobbies. And there have been buying "dry spells" where nothing really grabbed my attention. No big deal, save your money and wait for a big sale or a knife that really catches your attention.

Aside from different shapes and steels, everything is the same old stuff, just recycled.
Perhaps your buying habits are simply stuck in a rut? If your collection consists of 100 black plastic "tactical" knives...

Get into sharpening :D

If I only bought knives, and was only looking for more knives to buy I would be burnt out fast. Go take a camping trip, use your knives. Do reviews of the knives you have(we love reviews with pics.) Send a knife out for a regrind, learn how to get a scary sharp from freehanding. Design your dream knife, folder or fixed. Learn the history of lady knife. Watch the sites that sell custom knives, notice trends and fads. Make your own knife. Try a slippie (Soddie :D.) Customize a knife that you have not used in a while. Maybe it will become your favorite? Put a kit knife together. Refurb that beater knife you have laying around. Sell most all your knives and start over(its more fun than it sounds.) Try crazy angles to push that new super steel to its peak performance. Try EDCing one knife for one month....

Should I keep going? There are a ton of other thing to do in this hobby other than wait around for new knife designs to come out. ;)

Awesome post!

I alway give my older toys away, w/o much at hand.... I alway looking and want/need something new...

Awesome post!

Agreed! Good stuff, SoLo!

I wish I could get bored with knives. Unfortunately, the more I collect, the more I become obsessed with them. There's so much going on in the knife world now, and there is so much interesting history in the past, that there is no way anyone could possibly know everything about knives- there will always be something new to discover. The more you learn, the more you realize that you really know nothing.

I would recommend mixing things up a bit. If you collect folders, give fixed blades a try. If you're into tacticals, try out a few traditional patterns. Look into what people like in different countries, in different cultures. What were people using in the American West, or Victorian England, or in colonial-era Africa? There's TONS of interesting stuff out there, and with the internet, it's pretty easy to find.

But but ..there is still more.....

:D

Try a full SE knife, flip a bali, go to a knife show (most makers love to talk knives,) learn about your favorite makers, learn to take good pictures of your knives (must post them pix here!), get in on a few pass arounds(try a few knives that you would not buy(why not its free),) conduct tests on the knives you have(more pic posting THX :D,) learn how Damascus is created, hit the makers forums and add constructive posts if they want them, cash up here and see some stuff you can't now! :D wink wink

How's that for a place to start? :D

Try collecting small, cheap, weird knives...Uh, make that "unusual" knives.

Get some Spanish Navajas, French Lagui...whatevers...browse worldknives.com.
There's lots of strange steel out there. The Swedes make some interesting EKA folders.
Get some Okapis, Douk Douks, some handle-pull 'autos'.

For that matter, clean out your sock drawer to hold a collection of zomby-killa ninja knives. ...Well...nevermind that last...

Speaking of weird, get one of these:

Not a bad toy for $5. ...Heck, you can get it here for $3, and free shipping!:

And when your audience begins to doze off at your 15th story about that Case Peanut collection, you can jar them awake with your Pakastani leaf-knife. :)

Spyderco is supposed to be shipping their new "Rock Lobster" model sometime this month. The knife is a collaboration with custom maker Jens Anso.

How about starting to make knives? Theres nothing better than creating your own, and watching them get better with each attempt.
In no time it becomes like a disease, believe me!!

Making knives is the only thing that keeps my interest in knives going. I'm not a steel processor so I buy blanks and put scales on them. My buddies will always take a free hunting knife with an ass kicking handle.
Sometimes, I buy the latest knife that everyone talks about and give it away.
As far as a knife brand that nobody collects, as far as I know, my Hammer Brand collection of celluloid knives may be unsurpassed.
Is there a knife out there that will give me a laugh and be functional?

Kershaw ET
Camillus Lev-R-Lock
Limberline Timberlite - for a "good time" and to avoid boredom, hunt down one with clear handles that shows the mechanism

Are you seeking deranged laughter of despair, by chance? Try finding a "Majestic" by Aristocrat Knives. :)

I sometimes get bored with one type of knife. When this happens I switch my interests. I love Tacticals, but if I get bored I collect slip joints, or fixed blades. I also go on a Balisong trip every now and then. When I change interests I sell and trade away most of my collection and rebuild it in a new direction. A true collector has a love of all knife styles.
