Anything worse than a bad grind on an expensive knife?

Not true.

That has not been my experience with Spyderco. They all sharpen fine at both the 30 or 40 degree angle on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. That’s how they are designed.
You would probably never notice on a Sharpmaker, since there's a degree of inaccuracy inherent in how it's used. If you use a fixed-angle system (KME, TSPROF, Worksharp Precision Adjust, etc.) and an angle cube, it becomes obvious.
The Sharpmaker was the first "serious" sharpener I got, and it's okay for light maintenance, but it's pretty limited beyond that.
And if you don't have the CBN or diamond rods, it's not doing more than a microbevel for most high-end steels.

Wondering what else might be wrong with the knife, with that standard of QC.

All true, but Spyderco-USA puts on a good edge in my experience. It matches their sharpening system, so they “walk the talk”. If you want to see a factory edge that’s uneven, try GEC, but soft 1095 is easy to reprofile.

I have had a lot of Spydercos and have personally never seen a grind that was BAD. Sure I have seen super small imperfections, but nothing that was not inline with with a knife at that price point that was coming out of a factory.

Same, unless you are seriously interested in having a really good edge right at the heel of the knife, which I am not.
