Appeal/Durability of Blade Finishes?

Seeing Dan Farr's coated Military Bowie posted in another thread this morning reminded me that I had intended to go by Dan's table at Blade and take a look at his coated blades. However, I never got around to it.

Got me to thinking though. Has any maker ever approached companies like Dupont or 3M to see if they have or are developing suitable and most importantly materials durable enough to be used for coating knife blades or tools for that matter?

These companies have tremendous research & development departments and have had programs where they allow outside real application testing of their specialized materials. At least they have such for their experimental construction materials such as adhesives, sealers and metal siding coatings.
