Does anyone have the Apple iPod MP3-player? http://www.apple.com/ipod/ Would be a nice toy, the only drawback is that you can only connect it to a Mac! :(

Any other suggestions on a MP3-player, how about the Creative Nomad IIc?

The Mac part isn't a drawback!! Seriously, though, I think you
can connect them to Windows machines with a Firewire card.
I have a Mac, but I thought the biggest drawback was the price.

Sure, you can connect the hardware together but there isn't any software for other systems than the Mac... :(

Guess I'll have to stick to the Creative Nomad II then!

My coworker has one and loves it. Rio makes a similar device (size and capacity) that uses USB and supports Windows.

I have to agree that buying a Mac just so you can use an iPod isn’t the world’s best idea. But if you own a Mac already it is a very fun toy. My wife isn’t totally pleased with the iMusic software, she says there are a lot of things she would have done differently, but she is very happy with the results and the player itself. She is actually getting some use out of the factory tape deck in her car for the first time, and it should be invaluable on air flights.

Actually, there is. MediaFour makes software called XPlay to use an iPod with a Windows system.

(Of course, you really should get yourself a Mac.)

Preach on, brother Evolute. I dig my Mac. The Mac platform has shortcomings like any other, but man I love just using my system instead of fixing it all the time. I'm seriously considering buying one for my father instead of fixing his PC every week.

Please don't anyone interpret this as an invitation to a Mac versus PC holy war!

Nice, and thank's for the information! :)

And I'll think I will hold on to my PC as long as possible... But I'm not saying that the Mac is a bad choice in any way, they both have their pros&cons!

As nice as Macs are (I've been an owner since my 1983 Lisa), there is no reason to get one just to use the iPod. You should definitely check out a program called Ephpod (www.mentaljewelry.org/ephpod/) which has been much more reliable for me than the XPlay pre-release versions. I've been using Ephpod with zero problems on my PC, and the iPod really does not seem to notice the difference.

By the way, I had a Nomad Jukebox, and find the iPod completely superior in every way except for capacity. However, 5 GB will hold a LOT of music. Two big advantages of the iPod are size and the use of Firewire, which makes USB look snail-like when you are loading hundreds of MBs of music. Oh, and battery life is much better.

Rumor has it that Apple may eventually build Windows compatibility into a future update of the iPod...

OSX is supreme!
iTunes is supreme!
iPod is supreme(ly expensive) but kooler than the gang!

Apple is supposedly releasing a PC iPod. But, if the new iMac catches fire like I actually think it will, why bother.

Yep, just received my iPod. Ordered it from Buy.com, free shipping, and I got it the next day! I also got an Orangelink Firewire+USB2.0 PCI card for my Windows 2000 PC. I've been using MediaFour's Xplay Preview 6 software, and it's been working like a charm.

So far, I've transferred 33 albums of VBR MP3 to it and I've used up 2.43GB with 6.84GB available still. I'm still ripping my CDs as I type. :D

Yah, it's expensive. But it sure is nice! Good going Apple!

I've been ripping my cds for a while now. Variable bit rate is the way to go. My iTunes shows over 7.5 days of music in my library! My "A" list is over 2 days long. I burn cds for use in my car and they sound great. Glad you like your iPod!

Ohhh.. I do that too! Except, I have to burn a copy for use at work too. It gets to be a pain after a while. LOL!

Thinking of getting a Firewire portable hard drive and an el-cheapo Firewire for the work PC. If only I could find a Firewire port in my car stereo. Hehehe..

Well, I do have a iPod myself (the one with the 6GB HDD), I don't really use all the capacity, I actually have half of that as a backup HDD, as I can transport data from home to office. I can even boot up my Mac using it. I never tried hooking it up to a PC but I don't recall Apple having any PC driver for the iPod. Although you can hook it up physically using a Firewire card, you still need the neccessary PC driver to run right?

I've had the 10GB iPod for two days, and I've already filled half of it with about 60 albums. I'm going to kick myself when they eventually come out with a 20GB version. Doh! :D

For Windows use, there are a few software packages currently being developed. The two main ones are EphPod and MediaFour's XPlay. I'm using XPlay, which is currently a preview release only. It works seamlessly and the functionality is remarkable for a "Preview 6". The eventual full release is supposed to retail for $40.

Lots of general iPod information at: http://www.ipoding.com/

i have the nomad II, and it works fine, but i don't use either the radio or the voice memos like i thought i would, if i were buying again i'd go for the smallest thing availible that still lets you swap out memory.
