I don't use a case, I have dropped my iPhone several times, and I usually carry it in the same pocket as my clipped folder. It's cracked in three places (offscreen, thankfully), and has a few minor nicks and scratches in the screen. Doesn't bother me at all and I am quite satisfied with its durability. If you are the sort that gets bothered by these things keep at it with the cases and screen protectors. If not, these things are more durable than they are given credit for.
