I am a forged Bowie collector who wants to put a few good quality traditional slipjoints in his using draw. Unfortunately my knowledge is limited to what I have found on the web.

Schatt and Morgan have caught my eye, in particular the Congress model with the large bolsters stamped S&M, also the 3 blade Railsplitters with slanted bolsters, and finally the canoe models.

I am slightly confused however by the availability and pricing. Its seems some of the finishes are limited runs.

So my questions are:

  1. What is the quality like of these knives?
  2. Is there a good online source to see all the different years editions side by side?
  3. Is there any dealers people can recommend who can help source particular models?

.... be gentle:D

Cheers,

Stephen

I have only recently started collecting the S&M File & Wire knives, but I can recommend any of the third series without hesitation. My own particular favorite is the Deluxe English Jack, but it may be too large for others' tastes. The Wildcat Driller is even bigger, but still nice. You could use the main blade as a shovel.

Another option for a Canoe would be the 1095 High Carbon steel versions that Bill at Cumberland has. I have one in Amber bone that is a great pocket carry.

Cumberland is an excellent source for these (and most other production slipjoints), but it isn't too easy to get the pictures next to each other without some effort on your part.

A second recommendation for Cumberland Knife Works. You can't go wrong with them. Give 'em a call and they will help you out.

1. Schatt & Morgan are IMO the finest American made traditional slipjoints in production.
In fact as far as production knives goes S/M are as good in fit & finish as anybody in the world today.
2. Go to www.schattandmorgan.com or www.crisnercutlery.com to see the Reproduction Series side by each and quite a few File & Wire knives also.
#. I recommend Clarence Risner's site (at above addy) and also cumberland knive works.

How's that for "gentle"

Hello Stephen,

Congratulations on your delivery of the Schatt & Morgan, I hope you enjoy the quality and feel as much as I do mine..:) I liked them so much I sold off most everything else and replaced them with Schatt's..

I would very much like to see slipjoint pics of your new collection series...And also look forward to seeing more of your fixed blades...

Thanks,

Sunburst

Your comments are making me interested in picking up a Schatt & Morgan for an EDC. How are the "inventory cleanup" versions of their knives - same quality?

Same quality?? You bet! If you ever get a crappy knife out of Titusville send it back. They are good about "making it right"

Dave

Ditto on the same quality..Check out the S&M Premier series as well for great quality and style. One of my new EDC's is the Premier whittler..

Good luck,
