Most of us are aware of the amazing amount of generosity displayed among residents of The Porch. We often celebrate the generosity represented by one member gifting a knife (and often other fine gifts) to another member. I've been the recipient of many excellent gift knives, and I'm incredibly grateful for those gifts!:thumbsup:

But there are myriad examples of other types of generosity shown here, too. People are generous with their time, with their knowledge/information, with their advice, with their kindness/friendship, with their stories, and so on!!:thumbsup: I recently took delivery on a "shipment" of knives, and I think every knife I bought was essentially purchased on the basis of the influence (direct or indirect, purposeful or unintentional) of other BF members. In this post I want to acknowledge the advice, recommendations, and inspiration I received from other members here with regard to some specific knife purchases. If you "owe a debt of gratitude" to fellow members with regard to knives (or whatever), I'd be happy to have you add your acknowledgement to the thread!! :)

Thanks to Alan (joeradza) for sharing his enjoyment of at least one tortoise shell knife he has. It caused me to but a Rough Rider canoe with faux tortoise shell covers:

Henry Beige doesn't hide the fact that he's been enthralled with a RR improved muskrat that he owns. Even though he never told me directly that I simply MUST get one, I was impressed by his being impressed with the knife, and I got one in smooth tobacco bone. I consider the trading out of one of the muskrat clip blades for a full size sheepsfoot to be a definite improvement. RR's smooth tobacco bone has been a very attractive cover on previous knives I've had, even though it has varied from a yellowish to a rich brown. The pile side of my knife is a pleasing color to me, but the mark side seems rather pale; RR's smooth bone dye jobs tend to lack consistency, in my experience. Love the bollocks shield, though!! Thanks, Henry Beige, for bringing this splendid knife to my (our) attention!

Several members, whose identity I can't remember , have spoken highly of RR's Painted Desert "celluloid" covers. But I'm going to give afishhunter credit for corresponding with RR and finding out that their "celluloid" is (almost always) acrylic, and that was enough to convince me to go for a painted desert canoe. Thanks for taking the initiative and tracking down and sharing the useful info, Steve!

Thanks to Jeff (black mamba) for periodically showing off what he calls his Eureka stockman knives; very unique shape on those knives!:thumbsup: In my eyes, Jeff is sort of the Sultan of Stockman! ;) The RR Eureka Stockman models have been discontinued for quite some time, I think, but I managed to find a vendor that could get me one version in a brilliant red bone (the dye ran a bit when I gave it its initial washing, but that seems to have "run its course" now :D). (Jeff also has a RR stockman with armor hide covers, and that was at least a secondary influence in my picking up a knife featured below.)

One thing that impresses me about The Porch is its international membership. And members from "across the pond" have influenced me, too. Blake the Blade showed off a Rough Rider red jigged bone medium stockman at some point in the past, and I was immediately smitten by the knife. I finally have one!:thumbsup: Thanks for answering some questions I had about yours long ago when you first posted it, Blake! :) (I also should give props to at least a couple of unknown (i.e., forgotten by me) folks for their stylistic influence in the next two photos: I've always kind of liked the "knife on a shoe" pics, and they turned out pretty well for someone of my photo skills! ;))

Will Power had a hand in my ending up with TWO knives in my most recent purchases!:thumbsup: His photos and reviews of his RR baby copperhead convinced me to get one of my own. I actually did that quite a while ago, and am so pleased with the knife that I bought another recently as a back-up or, more likely, a gift to someone sometime. (More "knife on a shoe" here, too.)

Will has also praised RR's armor hide covers; he has a double-lockback knife with the armor hide handles (and maybe a Barlow?). His enthusiasm for that cover material made me add an armor hide RR canoe to my fleet.

Of course, Jack Black has influenced many of us, and I'm certainly no exception! Jack once posted a squirrelly spearpoint Douk-Douk, and when I expressed some interest, he encouraged me to get one. Apparently, his wish is my command!!:p It's a great knife, both in size and performance!
iUzlnQ4.jpg

Jack also displayed a RR Silver Select sowbelly in white smooth bone that caught my eye. I rarely see a sowbelly that doesn't appeal to me, but I realize that I can't buy every one I see! :( But Jack's testimony regarding the quality of the knife had me on the lookout for one for over a year, at least, and I finally located one recently. I don't Tweet, but I think it's appropriate for me to write #Ecstatic. :D (A tip of the hat, stylistically, to r8shell and Gevonovich for their "knives with creatures" pics - maybe it's an Austin TX thing? ;) When I saw the ant mounting an attack on my new sowbelly, I had the presence of mind to emulate Gev and Rachel and take a quick shot before rescuing my knife from the marauder! )

Anyway, thanks to those mentioned here, as well as to so many more BF folks who have been generous to me in so many ways!!:cool::cool::thumbsup:

I have a knife in mind that was bought expressly due to the recommendations and the influence of other members. I'll post that later because I want to first give kudos to you Gary for constantly posting a synopsis of all that goes on here. It must be your academic DNA that sees the chaff from the wheat and condenses everything into a coherent post. Now for the knives.

I would never ever buy a single blade sheepsfoot knife. It was ugly (to me) and what could it do to overcome that. Then I acquired a GEC #25 that was not only a sheepsfoot but it had an eo notch. Oh no, double ugly. Well, that double ugly knife is a fine functioning everyday blade. Need something to cut, it's out and open quick and easy. I still prefer many others but that's a prejudice that's mine to overcome.

Good looking knives. I especially like the first three. What steel is used for the Rough Riders.

The Rough Rider's with stainless steel blades all use 440A, with a good heat treat.
I don't know what carbon steel they use. It is probably a 10xx series though.
I do know my Colt canoe with carbon steel blades holds an edge just as long or longer than the carbon steel Case knives I have. Of course the Case uses a thinner blade stock; 1/16 inch give or take compared to the 1/8 inch give or take stock used on the Colt I have.

Some great looking knives there, Gary. :)

But there are myriad examples of other types of generosity shown here, too. People are generous with their time, with their knowledge/information, with their advice, with their kindness/friendship, with their stories, and so on!

Hear, hear! You've distilled in these two sentences what I believe is the essence of what makes The Porch the special place that it is.

Congratulations on your new arrivals and thank you for taking the time to highlight how each was influenced by folks here.

A fine selection GT all very decent. Very glad you share my enthusiasm for the Mini Copperhead, it's such a compact but effective Penknife pattern and well made too.

I think the Forum is essentially symbiotic, people gain from each other and it's an unbroken chain of altruism. Inspiration is personal but it's often ignited by somebody else.

Can't share any pix for a bit as I can't seem to be able to copy my Bucket contents to Imgur.....but with patience. My enthusiasm for the Farmer's Jack, I use 2 examples very frequently, were as a direct result of Lyle's contributions and connoisseurship. He and Charlie C then went on to commission knives from GEC that put the dream into my hands.

Regards, Will

Thanks for the supportive comments, Alan, and for your story about the sheepsfoot EO GEC 25. I've often considered starting a thread where people could post all the things that have surprised them about their "knife life".

GT, I'm glad you discovered the Eureka stockman, it sure is a great little pattern.

These were the four I originally had, but I've given some away, I think.

Jeff, YOU are the discoverer, and I'd never have noticed the pattern if you didn't occasionally bring it up here on The Porch!:thumbsup:

FWIW, you're also the inspiration for another knife that's always on my Be On the LookOut list: Rough Rider medium stockman in stag! Those apparently came out before I got started on the knife thing, but I've seen photos of yours, and they are highly desirable IMHO!! I may have to wait until I retire and have more time to devote to the search, but I'd be very happy to find an example or two of those old RR stag stockman patterns!

Somebody on this board, I don't recall who, pointed to that improved muskrat, and spurred me to look it up and buy it. When i first came on this board, I had never heard of Rough Rider. Gary, you were one of a couple of people who spoke particularly about the brand and prompted me to look into them. So in a way, anything I said was your own spadework coming back to you.

Getting into traditional slipjoints is a game that can get really expensive really fast, too expensive for me for the most part. I have therefore focused my interest mostly on less-expensive knives. You articulated really well the idea that there was merit in collecting or taking an interest in RR and the like, above and beyond using them just to try out a pattern before spending bigger money. Thank you for that.

Hey GT -- enjoyed your post very much. I saw an RR Muskrat a couple of days ago but didn't like the strawberry bone so I passed on it. However, I like the pattern very much and will have to think about adding one of those. The RR Trapper that I bought instead has the red jigged bone covers and I can see why you like them on your stockman. Mine has a little variation from side to side but not noticeable unless you look closely. It's a beautiful, rich, deep red, as is yours.

Nice thread idea GT, you are always generous in your encouragement of other members here, and a kind soul for sure :)

I am very grateful for all the help, advice, and generosity I've received here on The Porch :)

If I may, I'd like to use this thread to say thanks to Uncle Andi ( Humppa Humppa ) for reccomending the GEC #66 Serpentine Jack, still one of my favourite GEC knives :)

Also, thanks to @pertinux for her tireless promotion of the WLST, (and to @pmew for enabling me) :)

You're welcome, HB. Interesting take you have, suggesting that there was some "cyclic inspiration" that resulted in my getting a RR improved muskrat. I definitely admire your focus on less-expensive knives; I think we both go for examples of "inexpensive working knives from around the world".

Thanks, Ace. Early in my "journey" into pocket knives, I ordered 12 Rough Riders sold as a set, and one of the 12 patterns in that set was a muskrat. At first I didn't care for it; two identical blades seemed redundant. I actually gave it away eventually. Later, someone gifted me a muskrat, and I bought a stag model that was too good a deal to pass up, and somehow my opinion has changed - I like muskrats just fine now. But the 2 types of blades on the "improved" muskrat make more sense to me than the original pattern.

This is a wonderful thread, Gary. My purchases have been inspired by members here more often than not.

Alan ( joeradza joeradza ) has inspired my Tortoise Shell purchase as well as my (now, sadly, departed) Teardrop purchase. Jack Black Jack Black fuelled my Lambfoot desire. @pertinux has caused my wallet to deflate more than any member with her introducing Fiddleback Forge to me. I'm almost postive that I can't pin Barlows on anyone but Charlie, Randy, and Mike. It was a combination of @glennbad, @BigBiscuit, and @HeathH that inspired me to take the plunge into modifying my own knives. I can never forget @jackknife for my love of the humble Case Peanut. A Craftsman 4-way, P38, and a Peanut will forever be on my person.

Finally, Gary, it was you that made me realize, understand, and appreciate that you don't have to spend a fortune to have a fine knife. Your collection, appreciation, and exhibition of Rough Riders, Colts, Victorinox, et al have taught me to not jump at the latest GEC, Queen, etc because everyone else said "Jump".

Thank you to those mentioned and everyone else on BladeForums. I first ventured to this site looking for recommendations for an assisted tactical knife. I purchased one modern knife and over 100 traditionals since. I found a hobby, but more importantly, I found knowledge and friends.

Shawn, you can't have friends without being one. That's what I like about BF, there are no attitudes. Everyone is willing to share as if we were all hanging out on "the porch."

Thanks for chiming in with your acknowledgements, Shawn! A very thoughtful, kind, and enjoyable post.

(Totally unrelated "technical question" addressed to any knowledgeable reader: Why does the title of this thread start with a little square, and how do I edit it out? When creating/editing the thread title, there's a "field" at the start that allows one to choose a prefix for the thread. I went with "no prefix", thinking that would omit any trace of a prefix, but instead I have an empty box in that position.)

Thanks for the kind words, Jack - my friend.

Acutally the GEC #66 Serpentine Jack is one of my favorite knives. Even after all these years. I have no doubt that I could sell most of my knives. But the Serpentine Jack will be a knife that might follow me almost everywhere.

Only you can see that little empty square, GT, because you started the thread. Clicking on the square gives you the option to lock or unlock the thread. I'd say give it a try, but I like this thread and wouldn't want you to lock it. :p
