Approaching Burnout

I want to know if any of you all feel the way I do. I have bought so many knives the last several years that I actually loss 10-15 minutes every morning deciding which ones to put in my pockets. I still live my collection but it is taking up to much space. I also love new knives but frankly most new one handers look like the old ones. I feel I need to start saving and begin to collect customs and limited production pieces. At those prices i surely won't get as many since I'm not rich.

Sounds like you've progessed to the disease's second stage. There's no help for you now!

I got burned out on production knives as soon as I bought my Sebenza a while back, since I don't really need or want any other carry knife. Since then I've bought a couple of factory knives, but I haven't kept any of them. At this point I don't have any factory knives, nor do I plan to buy any more. I've found that even on the factory knives I like, there are just a couple of things that I don't like, which is ususlly enough to prevent me from buying.

From now on, I think it's going to be customs.

And about buying customs so that you won't be buying as many knives... that's the first step down a very slippery (and expensive) slope.

well if you have too many knives you can send some to me.
I'll provide them with a very good home!

I agree with cut finger. As a relatively new knife enthusiast I can relate. I am primarily a knife user and collecting is secondary. I was happy with production folders until I tasted that forbidden fruit (AKA Sebenza). This resulted in my production pieces being kicked out of my front pocket. As a user, I sure did not need any new ones gathering dust either. Guess what, no more production folders were purchased and I began looking into customs. At this point I am still quite happy using my production fixed blades (Marbles, Blackjacks, Spec-Plus) and there are many out there I hope to buy yet. But who knows, that first custom fixed blade may be around the next corner! I like to use my knives and as such I can only use so many. I guess I would rather have higher quality knives even if this meant there may be fewer to choose from. Quality over quantity from now on

Definitely a disease..

I am also one of the lucky people to be in the club of people that have cut their finger and I still cant stop thinking about and buying knives......

NUTS!! This a problem I could live with!

And, hey, I could probably help you out a little. Just loan me a few that you don't carry so often, and I'll keep 'em from feeling neglected.

I am with you, I think we have indeed progressed to the second stage of the addiction. I had a not so friendly event with benchmade repair that stopped my once a month buying habit. Shame as I live 10 minutes from them and have known some of the employees for a while. Second event was purchasing a Randall - definitely different than my other knives and I like it. Ordered a sword from Rob Criswell this weekend also and am very excited (26" katana of A2). Now I just need to sell some more and get something from Simonich and one of those darned Sebenzas.

I can relate to you, sir. However my main collection is Balisongs, since there are not many out there and with BM's discountinuation a while back it was always exciting. Maybe that is your ticket, to go for harder to get knives to keep things rolling.

I also recently got into customs, and appraoched burnout on productions. As always the best thing to do is to sell older carries if you can to get more that way there is always 'a new toy' whether it be custom or production folders and at the same time you wont feel guilty about spending too much.

Cut Finger,
I know what you mean about wasting time trying to figure out what knife to carry, AINT THAT GREAT!
biggrin.gif
What I did to fix that problem is choose a knife to carry for a week. That way you only have to wast time on Sunday and not be late for work on Monday.
Do not worry though, this is a phase that comes and goes. I was in the same boat with production knives and went to custom ones them I saw all the new knives that factories were putting out. I just bought five knives from Mike Turber and have not had a chance to carry all of them yet (Thanks Mike) but, I did take all of them apart though. HEHE

To sum up all of this, It is an affliction that can be lived with and even enjoyed if you are a TRUE Knife Nut.

Same here. I started collecting last June and started off with the usual, BM (M2 Stryker), EDI (Genesis I), Spyderco (BF Native), which are all around about the same price (<$150) but then I graduated to $200 with my BF REKAT Sifu, and within 6 months I ordered my Sebenza in December.

Now I'm looking at customs, or at least $200 plus knives and would buy an Elishewitz or some other such custom that caught my eye in an instant if I had the money.

I've got the disease, and I like it

Cut Finger, and other fellow "diseased" individuals.

You point out an interesting trend that has been occuring for the past two years.

Many of the factories have becuase of the use of technology coupled with using the designs of custom knife makers have been producing the best knives factories have ever produced.

However, this comes with a price...A higher price. As the factories raise their prices year after year, they are making their customers realize that for the price of two or three factory knives they can purchase a custom folder from one of the very world class custom knife makers that the factories rely on for their designs.

Additionally, as it has been pointed out, once you have a box full of factory knives what do you do with them. As I do not buy and sell factory knives I do not know what the exact procedure of selling a previously owned factory knife. I suspect the dealer or store you purchased the knife from will not take it back in trade or buy it back for cash, as is the case with custom knives.

Also, I would think with brand new factory knives available in so many venues. Coupled with the moderate price on many of these models. That there is probably not much demand for "previously owned" factory knives.

So a excellent question has been raised, what do you do with these knives?

I agree with those who have advised to go with quality in lieu of quantity.

I started buying custom knives because I found that factory knives could not meet my needs. It was after my first custom knife purchase that I got the "disease" bad. To the point that I now buy and sell custom knives full time!

Enjoy the journey.

Mike, I think you should bestow on Cut Finger immediate Senior Member status. Ya know like kind of a Battlefield Commission, because I'll tell you this guy has earned his stripes and he's got Senior Member written all over him.

First he cuts himself, and is proud of it, he has too many knives and he wants more, so he figures spending more for each knife is the answer....I've got to tell you, I've got a tear in my eye. If this guy isn't Senior Member material then I don't know who is.

Cutfinger:

Not only are you on the right path but you're on the path most travelled. There is no question that you'll have more satisfaction if you let quality win out over quantity. There is also no doubt that knife knuts normally get to this point and there's not not much question about you are deserving of the title of knife knut.

In my business I'm surrounded by knives, cheap ones, expensive ones, production ones, custom ones. Most of them aren't particularly interesting to me. I have a drawer full of about 50 or 60 knives that make up my personal collection of users and I rarely use them any more. I tend to carry some fairly exotic stuff these days even if I mostly open boxes with my knives. I enjoy opening it, using it and closing it.

The cheaper knives do just as well at opening boxes but they don't do as well in the personal satisfaction department. Take care and enjoy the journey.

Hi Fred,

I agree completely,

I am also getting tired of factory knives. I still buy Microtech (of course), but I try to stay away from the other production knives. In fact the only other brand I am activly buying is Spyderco. Can't get enough of that round hole stuff.

(I buy them to collect not to use.)

Later,
John

P.S. The Sebenza bug has bit and I will have to get one soon!

Congratulations to you if you can make the step from accumulating to collecting knives.
I'm still trying, but I fail from time to time.

P.S.: I found one of the most important things to have a wish-list that keeps you from buying immediately what you see.

Forumites:

I appreciate the response. It is nice to talk to people who know what I'm talking about. Reading your posts has reaffirmed my opinion that I need to become more selective and quality conscious in my collecting. Like Automantic, I still have a soft spot for Spyderco (I hear a Dyad jr. Lightweight calling me now!)But even there I have found my self cutting back. By this summer, I plan to take the plunge and get a new large Sebenza and maybe I can locate a handmade Ken Onion speed safe knife. I have collected knives since I was five and I will only stop when pass to the great beyond, however, I might as well increase in quality as life goes on.
