Approaching Burnout

I have to agree with the sentiments expressed regarding custom knives, their cost in relation to factory knives and their continuing worth.
On the other hand, I for myself at least, buy knives because I love them not just for their monetary value or possible future worth. Yes, there are some knives that I'd like just because they are worth a lot. But overall I would say that if I like a knife for any reason, I buy it. Like it for it's looks, make, material, design, uniqueness, exclusiveness...whatever. I collect for me and me alone, so in the end, I just have to enjoy my collection and not impress myself with the sheer worth of it. I think by quitting to buy "cheaper" factory or factory/custom collaboration knives and purely going to customs, you're going to miss out on a lot of great knives.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I agree that a knife nut will always keep an eye on factory knives to see if something really new is being offered. For instance, last year the Axis lock and Speed Safe were innovations that collectors should have wanted. In my case, however, I have developed a collection with too much redundancy. Several Delicas, a Standard, several Natives, two Calypso Jrs. In other words, too many knives that had pretty much the same function . I need to move away from the factory knives or else I will be flooded in blades and my wife will kick my rear!

Wow, I've been feeling the same way for a couple weeks now. I'll be hard pressed to get another production fixed blade, as I've found a couple makers (Lynn Griffith, Neil Blackwood) who do exactly what I like for prices I can handle. As for folders, I've been bit by the Sebenza bug myself, and will hopefully have one this year. The Synergy is also calling me. Add a mil-spec Commander to the list and those will probably be the only folders I buy this year. After that, with the possible exception of a Microtech or two, I'll probably head into the Brave New World of custom folders. I'm really liking the Wortac, and that Talonite Carnivore is pretty awesome too. I've found that the fun of choosing between all the custom options makes up for the longer delivery time and higher price. And when you sliiiide open that knife drawer and see those customs, OH WHAT A FEELING!

I don't have that problem anymore now that I got my small Sebenza. The choice is easy. I always carry it. I have gotten to the point that now I don't want anything unless it's from Chris, Allen, Darrel, Kit or equally as nice. I now plan on buying less often and better quality.
