I picked up an old sledge hammer head last fall at a flea market for $5. This thing looked rough! I assume that's why it was still there.

The handle was cracked, old, and half rotted. The head was rust covered.

I've had the head in white vinegar sitting in the sun for three days now. I need to dump it and change it out for new, but it's starting to look really nice again. The rust is almost all gone, and I can even see the mild steel/high carbon delineation area.

Its a Warwood marked "8" and "X37". I'm assuming it's am 8 lb head? The local hardware store has a lot of very nice hickory handles, but what length do I need? I've never done a rehang on a sledge.
