Approved EDC uses

I use it for whatever I want, But if it breaks ......I don't bitch about it,yeah there's more appropriate tools but the knife is always handy.

The OP was pretty funny but believe it or not, some of us out here do actually use our knives to do things most people say no one actually does. Talk to any cop, firefighter or EMT sometime. They aren't carrying knives because it's "cool" or because they live in a fantasy world. There is a level of reverse snobbery going on in some of these interweb posts too ;).

Cutting open tires to get at narcotics is pretty common-place among a lot of agencies/departments. As is prying open doors and windows. Slashing burlap sacks full of dope was damn near an everyday occurrence when I worked down south and prying open dashboards or dismantling dashboards/car speakers or upholstery was routine as well. Vehicle accidents sometimes call for quick use of an edc for a million different reasons. I've cut open paneling and drywall to get at hidden compartments and God knows how much other crap I can't even remember. It's a big world out there, and many folks with different experiences live in it. . .

Proper use of an EDC is as follows:

- Take pictures of your knife alongside a bunch of flashlights, watches, your wallet, the stupid crap you carry on your keychain, etc.
- Post pictures of it on the internet and brag about how sharp it is.
- Go into your backyard and cut up ridiculous amounts of perfectly good rope once in a while even though you don't actually need to, then post pictures of it on the internet.
- Sharpen it using a 4000$ sharpening system, even when it isn't dull in the first place.
- Put fobs, lanyards, beads, and after-market accessories on it (then post pictures on the internet, of course).
- Fantasize about the "extreme hard use tactical EDC emergency use" things that you'll never do with your knife because you don't work for a living.

At least, that's what I've learned from reading internet forums. I could be wrong...

that's pretty damn good, lmao

I use mine for anything. My Rukus has enough weight to it, I use it in the closed position as a hammer when needed. I stab it into the the ground sometimes when I forget my screw driver. Prying is cool. I messed up today. I cut open a bottle of antifreeze then used it to cut my boneless pork chop at lunch. I throw it at Sasquatches whenever the need arises, and scale catfish with it all the time. Seriously, half of what I said was true. I will use my carry knives for anything I need to.

I use my knife for all the things in the OP when the situation requires it. I also use my knife to open packaging containing other knives as one poster mentioned. I don't try to use my knives for stuff other available tools would do better, though.

This thread has been very enlightening and entertaining. It's given me some new ideas about how to use my knives.

To play off the OP:

With Today's phones you shouldn't:
Use the camera features (go buy and carry a DSLR for that)
Try to use internet (laptops, tablets, and desktops for that)
Play games (the proper thing is to have a DS or PSP)
Listen to Music (Get an iPod)
Talk on the Phone (you might drop the call if you lose the signal, better to just find a standard phone)

There is a point of compromise when the tool that is easiest to carry becomes the one most readily/commonly used. Unless one plans on carrying the "bag of goodies from walmart" that another poster joked about, a knife has a one/many tool/job relationship just like a phone does, which usually can't be said for the items deemed "correct" to use for these jobs.

In one fun instance, I needed to make a pilot hole in a gutter to put a screw in. I'm sure there were more "proper" ways to do it, but I ended up using my Endura and hammer since they were near me and got the job done, a big EDC no-no. ;)

What man?? Dudeeeee if you wanna talk POU about your EDC then I suggest you check out TNP. Dudeee use #1, Emergency tactical use. Use #2, a back up to the other 6 knives in your fanny pack. Use #3, make brief 11 minute videos.

But seriously, I use my knife for The 7 Deadly Knife Sins. Use your knife for whatever the hell you want to use it for. If you'd rather use a kitchen knife or the restaurant steak knife who cares? I enjoy my knife AND i enjoy looking at pictures of everyone's knives, how BORING would this forum be without the pictures, well.. still better than tv

i use my knife whenever i need to or whenever it will make my life easier. some people set limits as to when and where they will use their knife, i don't.

thanks, nice thread

Since you are so patient with my doofus questions, mind telling me why the "guthook" on the tomahawk? (and what is it really called?)

First off, LOL. It's always funny when somebody states the obvious in a sarcastic manner.

Now to the real meat of the post. Proper use of your EDC is anything you can use it for. The knife is man's oldest tool behind the BFR (thats big fu@$ing rock- for those non-military types). Let it work for you and appreciate it, both for it's simplicity as well as its form and function. As with all equipment, maintain your sh%t so it doesn't fail.

That front spike is made for adding penetrating capabilities to the cutting edge of the tomahawk as well as creating a ripping effect when retracting it after a strike. This hatchet is meant to be a CQC weapon. The hatchet is called the R&D Hawk. It’s made by Daniel Winkler and was designed by him and Rafael Kayan of the Sayoc group.
