I've read that the Sage is supposed to come out in several versions, all with different locks. Is there any known schedule as to the release dates/approximate release times of the future versions? And does anyone know which lock is going to be used next?

I want a Sage. It looks like a fantastic knife, but I don't want a liner lock

I look forward to the new models.

I just received my first Sage, I really like this model.
The carbon fiber handle is awesome, a nice change from G10.
The Sage seems to be aprox the same size as the Native, although a little thiner
handle, which with the CF, makes one nice edc, my Caly lll will be jealous of this new comer. Regarding the liner lock, I have no problem, being that my Millie and
Tenacious have LL and that these knives are a Spyderco product, I have full confidence in there workmanship.

It's not that I don't trust the liner. It's more like the idea that someday it will wear out (I know, might be a long time, but still...)

I'd really like to see a Sage with the ball lock. I'd be first in line for that model. A lockback would also be very nice.

THG lol, I know what your saying, but if your anything like most of us,, our attention span for a new knife is about two to three weeks.:p
Then were on to a new improved version of steel, scales or what have you.
Truthfully for me, I don't know which one to carry any more. I'll carry my Sage
when I go uptown, and the the Millie when I go downtown, and the Caly to work. Neither gets over worked..so no fear of wearing out. :D
You will be well pleased with the Sage I'm sure of that, hopefully you won't have to wait to long for the next release.

Peace Out,

Dave

Got my Sage yesterday, it's now my work EDC. I have to wear dress clothes, and the Sage is perfect with the deep, black, wire clip for dress pants. Really doesn't stand out at all with black slacks. It's a little larger than the Benchmade 770 I've been carrying for a good while, but still small enough to be indiscreet.
I like the texture on the carbon fiber, a nice change from the smooth I'm used to. Locks up tight, although the liner lock is a little thinner than I'd like. Shouldn't be a factor for it's intended use though. Seems very well made, we'll see if it can take the place of the 770 for a while.

Hi THG,

The Sage project is quite difficult as new engineering is required for every variation and sales figures may or may not support the effort depending on the model.

We also have to get permission from the "creator" of the "lock" before we can use their name. This is sometimes challenging as we do not pay a royalty for the use, we only give recognition.

Chris Reeve has given us the go ahead for the RIL (Reeve Integral Lock) version, so it's next.

As we get each one into the market, we will begin the next. Some may take longer than others due to the aforementioned engineering requirement.

I for one,am sold on the Sage,it's not to small or large and fits the hand nicely.
With the addition of the wire clip set low,the knife is carried discreetly.
This will be my new collector series, along with the Native.
Great work Sal!!

I have the liner lock Sage and I love it too. It even took over edc duties from my G10 Delica. I really want the RIL lock.

Sal, do you know what type of material you'll use on the handle?

Im curious why spyderco does not pay a royalty to someone who designed a part of the product?? Is this common in the knife industry

Thanks for checking up on us here sal....

Gadgetman Good to hear, there are others out in Spidie land, that love the sage. I sure hope it catches on,so that it's not discontinued, that would be a real shame.

Is that true? Does that mean that ANYONE who makes knives with linerlocks have to pay royalties to Walker? I'm not too sure about that...
This analogy comes to mind: if McDonalds had "invented" burgers, would Burger King, Arby's, Red Robin, and anyone else who makes and sells burgers would have to pay royalties? I don't even know if that's a good or applicable analogy lol

On the other hand, I know that Spyderco has credited Emerson for the Wave and I believe pays royalties on that.

But I'd like to know for sure from Sal as well.

I just found out that the Sage doesn't have a backspacer :(
That's a turn-off to me. I'd assume that the lockback version will, so I'll wait for that one :D

What I think Sal is saying that on knives that are collaborations with designs for example centofante or bram's gunting. That they do not get any royalties based on the sale of the knife. I assuming they are compensated in some way, however I dont know if it is common in the knife world to not include sales based royalties and if so why.

We pay royalties for designs that we make with outside designers. We pay royalties for patents still in force.

These will mostly be locks whose patents are already expired or were never patented like Walker Linerlocks. If we do any that are still in force, we'll pay royalties.

Sal - thanks for the info.

Do you have a handle material picked out for the upcoming frame lock version? One side carbon fiber/other side steel frame lock would interest a whole lotta folks. :)
