howdy folks- this thread is about aprons.

Do you wear one? Want to? Don't want to? Whyyyy???

Anyway, the idea for this thread came from what I've seen of Mareko's new apron collaboration, (which looks pretty dope).

I have a canvas duck army duffle that I can get an apron or two out of and I've been meaning to get onto making it. Hopefully within the next couple months, so this is also a bit of a research project for me, too.

I wear a burn and spark-resistant cotton welding jacket, that looks kind of like a mad scientist jacket crossed with a traditional Chinese Mandarin jacket crossed with nurse's scrubs. It has a collar that closes round the neck, nice loose sleeves, pen holder, etc.

But now that I've seen the Mareko apron I really want one! :D

Sometimes I wear one when I get dirty. I have an extra long one that goes past the knees.

But mostly I wear a jacket like this:

I wear a set of cover-all's. Works great, although it is a bit hot.

I bought a cheapo amazon leather one with a lots of pockets. I like wearing it when there is a lot of grinding going on and it has a lot of pockets as well. I usually wear a blue jacket (like the one above but shorter) and old jeans or heavy cotton pants in the shop. If I came in nice clothes from work straight to shop I also have like cover all pants. Ruined some fine clothes before (mostly with epoxy).

I had a denim one I wore out. Often thought of building a leather one but have never really got around to it. If I were I would use a leather called Grey Apron Split. In the western world its often called mulehide (its not) and its used for farrier chaps and saddle horn wraps. Its about a bomb proof a leather as there is and relatively inexpensive. Comes in two tannages, firm and soft. Here is a pair of farrier chaps I made for a local guy out of the firm tannage.

I made my son a pair out of the firm tannage and he said he had to roll them up and drag em behind the truck a few miles to break em in.

I adapted a leather welding apron to something like what Stacy shows, splitting the apron up the middle to the 2nd rivet and moved the straps so they wrap each around a leg, allowing me to grab the tongs when using top tools by myself, and now that it's getting cooler, I'm getting back in the habit of wearing it more often.
I get too hot in the summer to wear it, and burn a few shirts up each year as a result.

I don’t need it.
I’d rather just wear an old jacket or shirt
It adds no value to my working
It’s a bit too heavy and not easy to move in

I move around a lot in the shop and I like freedom of movement

My thoughts exactly, although I did buy a leather welding apron at Canadian Tire and wear it a few times to see if I liked it or if it added any benefit. But it just pulled on my neck and was uncomfortable, restricted my mobility, limited access to my pockets, and just generally made everything more difficult for me.

thank you :)

I have a nearly floor length canvas apron my wife made that I wear sitting down to catch carving chips and also to catch spray if I grind sitting down. Changed it around this year to hang off a pair of altered suspenders like on the expensive spread. Works great. No pockets; crap catchers.

I just got a thick lined work shirt from Carhartt since I was getting little slivers stuck in my other shirts. It mostly happens when hogging with 36 grit. I just leave it hanging in the garage. It's pretty comfortable for the temps we've had lately.

You can do knife making sitting down? 😯

when grinding razors i do had a custom double protection patch on the chest and crossed neck straps for comfert Brett Smith (Tstar leather) worth every penny

Half apron from Texas Canvas. I like having a few hand tools, a tape measure, utility knife and sharpie\contractor pencil\mechanical pencil all handy. I don't like a strap around my neck and a full apron gets hot.
