Aqua Salt plain edge FB23YL

Thanks for your advice about H1 steel, none of which is news to me. I have owned a few of these for several years, as you can see in the photo.

Anyhoo, looks like I'm not going to win this one, and since I did manage to find a cheaper shipping option, I mailed it back.
 
We can't win 'em all. :( The scratching problem can be taken care of with a hard buffing wheel and some decent personal protection equipment. Buffing will cause the surface of H1 to surface harden and become more scratch-resistant.
 
I've got plenty of Satin D2, VG10, 154CM, even an S30V blade that all have been scratched up because of cardboard. If you use the knife it's going to scratch. If you don't want scratches on your knives then don't use them. It's a pretty simple equation.
 
A friend brought up a good point about my statement. One of our fellow Spyderco enthusiast's serrated Salt folders used to scratch up like H1 blades often do. He got his blade resharpened on a buffing wheel. Afterwards, the blade wasn't scratched and looked all shiny and resisted scratches much better than before it was buffed. Please take my statement to mean "I think" or "I'm desparately guessing" to suggest why buffing his blade made it more scratch resistant.

If you cut a lot of cardboard, you're going to cut cardboard with staples, even if you don't notice them, and you're going to get scratches. I'm careful and my knives for cutting cardboard are unscratched.
