Anybody use Aquamira drops to treat water? I just picked up a pack as a compact, simple alternative to my Pur Hiker filter. It is chlorine dioxide and comes in a set of two small bottles. To make it work, you combine seven drops from each bottle, let it react for five minutes, and then add the solution to one liter of water for 15 to 30 minutes. I have not tried it, but it claims to have no bad taste and a shelf life of four years.

I switched over from my filter and will never look back. Aqua Mira really doesn't have any after taste like Idione, but make sure you count out the correct drops or an overdose will have a bit (although not too bad) after taste. B.L. I love Aqua Mira and won't go willing back to filters anytime soon.

It's the only chemical to use-- kills more bugs than iodine or a filter and there's no taste. Katadyn Micropur tablets are another form and there is a ready to use liquid under the Klearwater brand. Aqua Mira is a little more trouble to use, but goes a long way and it is fresh and effective as you mix it on the spot. Some people even use it as a disinfectant-- haven't tried that. If you want to chop 12 ounces or so off your pack weight filter weight), its the easiest way to go.

I pack the Micropur tablets as a backup for a clogged or broken filter. I tape several foil packets to my water bladder so they are handy when needed. I decant the Aqua Mira into tiny dropper bottles for super ultra light solo overnight hikes.

Just make sure you let it sit for the five minutes before adding it to the water. A friend and I used it for five days this fall when my filter clogged due to algae in the water. We didn't wait the five minutes and Jeff came down with giardia. I either escaped infection or am asyptomatic. It's head and shoulders ahead of iodine as far as taste is concerned. I still like a filter when there's a lot of visible particulates in the water, but would consider the Aquamira drops as a primary method if I was tense about weight and/or volume.
