Aquiring an accent...?

My wife and I were discussing this very subject with some people a week or so ago. While anyone good enough at it can do an acceptable job of faking most accents I have NEVER heard anyone successfully fake an Australian or NZ accent. For some reason you just need to be born with those. My wife still has a trace of American accent, you can hear it especially in the way she pronounces the R in many words. She also has trouble with many Oz place names like Booroowa, Currawang and the like.

But, as has been noted, most people trying to bung on an accent just sound like dicks!

There was a young man, student at Univ. of Texas, who had a part time job making deliveries. He delivered to us a couple of times a week. His accent was so heavy I sometime had trouble understanding him. From the sound of it to me and his frequent use of "mate", I assumed he was from Australia. I made some wise crack about did the Texas heat remind him of home in the Outback. He told me I had the wrong side of the world. He was from Manchester, England. Shows what I know.

The accent Brad Pitt had in Snatch was the typical Irish "Knacker" or itinerant traveller accent :) I had trouble with it and we hear it a lot in Ireland,my wife had no bother though! :)

Oi 'ate f*ck1n' Poikeys!

Back when I was in college lots of folks would drive down to Laredo every couple of months to pick up cheap liquor and suchlike. I was often asked to go along because there were only two of our group who spoke Spanish, and I was one of them. During one trip I saw a really nice tooled leather rifle scabbard that I had to have. I bargained with the little old lady in the stall for a while and got her down to a price I was willing to pay. After I paid up, she asked me where I was from, and I confessed that I was from Texas. She was surprised, and said that she wouldn't have guessed that, because I sounded almost exactly like her sister-in-law, who was from Dolores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato. As an anglo speaking Spanish, that was the highest compliment I ever received.
I wish I were still that fluent and my accent was still that good.

Ahh memories - to be a young, Australian male living in Northern California again........... Man I had some fun that year.

a few years ago i was taking a german class in high school and sence i come from a german leniage (sp) i can at some times aquire a realistic accent because ive herd it all my life.

i would use these two talents sometimes in classes like math and english while i was sleeping. if someone "woke" me id set stright up and start fussing and cussing in german at the top of my voice for a second or two. the other guys thaught that it was funnyer than hell but i got suspended a time or two lol
