I know there has been a few threads here lately on Ars. I bought a stripped lower SW mp15 yesterday and wanted to build the rest of it to save a few bucks. Currently where I live no one has a complete rifle in stock any ways. I called around and model 1 says they can ship a Car 4 16” Ar kit in 18 weeks. I was hoping I could get any insight in what I should get to put together a good sporting rifle. Does any one have any experience with model 1. What options should I add to get the most bang for my buck!!?? I was planning on a chrome-lined barrel. Flattop. I called Rock River and they could not even give me an estimated ship time on the car 4 kit and the kit is $300.00 more!!! Should I wait it out and pay more or am I just paying for the name?

Buy the best components you can find/afford. You can build a cheapie AR for around 800$, but you'll kick yourself later. Go Colt, Noveske, LMT, or Sabre defense. At the least go CMT/Stag or CMMG. Build a DPMS frankenrifle, and you'll only find yourself spending more loot to get something better down the line.

If you are willing to spend the money for good components, I might be able to help you find an LMT upper. It'll run you around 800$, but it'll be top shelf. Then you can drop a CMT lpk in, and have a solid rifle that'll last you.

I think the CMMG are the best bang for your buck when it comes to quality vs name brand buying. There are lets say for sh_ts and giggles there are 30 companys selling Ar's, and out of those 30 companys there are really only about 6 companys building the parts and having the other names stamped on the parts. Just food for thought bro

Use a good barrel and a good trigger, and you'll be fine. I like the Timney drop in trigger, barrels are up to you. What weight bullet are you shooting and what is your goal? Long range precision, hunting, target practice, 3 gun comps?

Barrels are hard to come by right now as well. Feel free to PM me if you find something you like and I'll give you any insight/ experience I have on the product.

I was originally thinking of getting some thing in the .308 persuasion. I hunt alot here in the Rockies in the fall and I found a great public area but the big bulls tend to hang out in the dark timber. I hunt with a bolt action .270 WSM with a scope and I lost shots on three good bull sighting last year due to slow target acquisition. I was thinking an iron or Halo sighted automatic rifle would be useful in those tight mountain quarters. The .308 ammo is alot cheaper as well. I want a springfield M1A1 but cant afford the hefty price tag. My WSM .270 rounds are $37 a box of twenty. On the other hand the 5.56 is cheap as well and would make a good defense rifle. I am not sure if it is worth picking it up for a plinker target rifle. I like getting out to the range and the wildness area for some target practice. I didn't come across any complete kits in .308. I hear bushmaster makes a .450 cal that is a thumper. I think it is more of a hog caliber then the four legged critters running around this neck of the woods??? Any ways, any help or just your two cents would be appreciated.

My advice would be don't go with Model 1 Sales. I'll be happy to visit via IM about why. I have first hand experience with a lot of the Kit Companies--I have sold all of them too. J&T Distributing is much better IMO. But you would be better served to track down the parts individually. The LPK, Lower Parts Kit and the BCG, Bolt Carrier Group are going to be extremely hard to find right now. A LPK from CMT (Stag) or RRA (they're the same according to some) is probably your best bet. They're both quoting 16 weeks out right now. DPMS LPK's are available but not worth it. They used to go for $55 all day long and the best LPKs (CMT/Stag/RRA) for $69, there's a lot of gouging going on where they're selling for $100+ on the arfcom equipment exchange. An MP marked BCG from CMT would be OK but you'd be much better served to wait for LMT and just order direct. BCM makes a great BCG too but they're indefinantely backordered. They're only $130 too, where the gouge price is $200!

If you are willing to do the leg work, Bravocompany USA is worth the effort. It is the best quality upper for the money you can get. Just look up BCM upper threads on AR15.com and m4carbine.net or order an LMT directly over the phone and they'll give you a wait time. It'll be in months but well worth it. I'd also suggest getting a Magpul CTR buttstock with all the mounting hardware. They're worth it and will save you the upgrade cash. BCM has some nice furniture sets available.

Denny at Global Tactical is a hell of a guy. He doesn't answer e-mails so call him if you want to talk to him or order stuff off his site without any problems.

G and R Tactical has good customer service and good prices. I believe the same guy owns m4carbine.net too. A place where you can learn a ton in the knowledge base threads.

Soulrack 223 what do you think of the .308 Ar platform?
I went to AR15.com and checked out there build your own forum, no one seemed to have any thing good to say about model 1 there as well.

I dont own one. I do have an M1A though. ;)

Man after checking out LMT's website it might be cheaper for me to pick up a Springfield! Thanks for the leads though! You seem to know your AR, hence the handle soullrack223!!! If I go with a 223 I think I will get a stag upper. I have heard only good things about them.

Yeah, CMT/Stag is good stuff. Definantely better than DPMS and at one time made pretty much everything for RRA and S&W though I don't think that's the case now. The ergonomics of the AR are far superior to the M1A but for the 308 cartridge, the M1A platform will outlast the AR by tens of thousands of rounds. Many claim by hundreds of thousands of rounds. LMT unveiled a billet 308/7.62 rifle at shot like the current MRP rifles but beefed up. I am very intrigued--but I will be keeping my Springfield Bush Rifle. When LaRue announced their 7.62 rifle I pre-ordered one and then cancelled. Too much $ right now.

Here is my black rifle. RRA M4 A3 with Daniel Defense 9.5 FSP, Tango Down grips front and rear, Beta C-Mag

From what I hear, Stag/CMT does indeed manufacture most of the parts on the Smithies. Supposedly, the Smithies come with LMT BCG's, though...and that's a good thing.

If you want an LMT, I might be able to help you get one quicker than months, but it'll be a complete rifle and won't be cheap. You won't wish you'd bought something else, though. Pm if you have interest.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better than the Stag kit available from Legal Transfers on AR15.com. There's a bit of a wait, though. I've had a 6.8 kit on order since December.

That said, I've built several with kits from J&R and have been quite happy with the quality, parts and service. And they offer a lot of different configurations.

You also can't go wrong with lower parts kit and an LMT or Bravo Company upper from Bravo Company. I have a couple LMT uppers and lowers, and they're top-notch. And anything Bravo Company puts their name on will be at least as good.

i wished i would have known that you were looking, i just threw all my guns in the lake...

MAWAHAhahahahahahahahaha! ;)

Thanks for the insight. They do seem to have some fair pricing at AR15.com,I signed up for that forum as well. The only thing is there 5 to 6 months out.....

From there site:
IMPORTANT: Please be aware that due to tremendous demand
Stag Upper orders may take 20 TO 25 weeks to ship.
DO NOT place an order for a Stag Upper if you are unwilling to tolerate this wait.
Cancellations or changes to existing orders will be subject to a 15% processing fee.

What is the deal with there exchange is it a good place to buy or are the prices marketed up sky high do to demand???
