AR kit

Thanks for the insight. They do seem to have some fair pricing at AR15.com,I signed up for that forum as well. The only thing is there 5 to 6 months out.....

From there site:
IMPORTANT: Please be aware that due to tremendous demand
Stag Upper orders may take 20 TO 25 weeks to ship.
DO NOT place an order for a Stag Upper if you are unwilling to tolerate this wait.
Cancellations or changes to existing orders will be subject to a 15% processing fee.

What is the deal with there exchange is it a good place to buy or are the prices marketed up sky high do to demand???

The Stag kits in the AR15.com group buy from Legal Transfers are very reasonably priced, but you do have to put up with he wait.

You can get often good deals on the AR15.com exchange if you know what you're looking for and know what it should cost, much like the BladeForums exchange. But I suspect that pretty much anywhere you look, if you want it now, you'll have to pay a premium. Everything seems to be back-ordered everywhere. The manufacturers just can't keep up with demand these days.

And a correction: When I said I'd built several rifles from J&R kits, I meant J&T. Back when I was researching this stuff a few years ago, they were generally recommended over Model 1.

I was originally thinking of getting some thing in the .308 persuasion. I hunt alot here in the Rockies in the fall and I found a great public area but the big bulls tend to hang out in the dark timber. I hunt with a bolt action .270 WSM with a scope and I lost shots on three good bull sighting last year due to slow target acquisition. I was thinking an iron or Halo sighted automatic rifle would be useful in those tight mountain quarters. The .308 ammo is alot cheaper as well. I want a springfield M1A1 but cant afford the hefty price tag. My WSM .270 rounds are $37 a box of twenty. On the other hand the 5.56 is cheap as well and would make a good defense rifle. I am not sure if it is worth picking it up for a plinker target rifle. I like getting out to the range and the wildness area for some target practice. I didn't come across any complete kits in .308. I hear bushmaster makes a .450 cal that is a thumper. I think it is more of a hog caliber then the four legged critters running around this neck of the woods??? Any ways, any help or just your two cents would be appreciated.

Google the .50 Beauwolf. My brother built one and it is kick azz.

Things just suck right now. Almost nobody has parts in stock right now. Unless your willing to pay the inflated prices, just wait it out. Not much of a choice, panic buyers are buying everything up as fast as its made. Just get on some E-mail notification lists, and hope your home when the dealer gets the parts in.

The .458 SOCOM is badass!! The Beauwolf is less accepted from what I can see and I think ammo might be harder to come by. I ordered a Rock River 5.56 kit and I think I will wait it out.....I am thinking of buy this .458 upper to have as a hunting rifle. It may be too much gun for even a larger bull elk...

Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
250 gr (16 g) 609.6 m/s (2,000 ft/s) 3,983.8 J (2,938.3 ft·lbf)
600 gr (39 g) 304.8 m/s (1,000 ft/s) 3,612 J (2,664 ft·lbf)

The rounds are a bit costly but like Busse blades you get what you pay for!!

YES that is 600 grain bullet!!!

How much are the 600 gr's? and where do you find them?

SBR and Reed's make 500 grs, but I haven't seen 600s for sale. As far as I know, Cor-Bon is the only other manufacturer of loaded .458 SOCOM, and their heaviest load is a 405. You might have to load your own if you want 600s.

I am not sure if anyone sells complete rounds but Barnes references the 600 grain bullet and I copied this exerpt from there web page.
Also there is mention of it here on Teppo Jutsu site ( http://teppojutsu.com/ cool site by the way!!!)......I am not sure but maybe this 600 grainer was discontinued. Someone who owns this rifle might have the experience with this round to answer this question better...????

The original Fred Barnes soft-point bullets having pure copper jackets of 0.032″ wall thickness also are made in 14 weights for seven calibers, as well as a 600-grain thumper in .458 diameter with 0.049″ jackets. (Note: if your friends are pestering you to let them shoot your 12-pound .460 Weatherby Magnum rifle, use the max load in the Barnes Manual for this 600-grain bullet-114 grains of H4831 for 2,496 ft/sec-as a dissuader, for it gives an even 100 foot-pounds of free recoil.) Barnes Bullets also may offer X-Bullets for the new Remington 6.8 Special Purpose Cartridge, for both military and civilian use. Lastly, Barnes makes match-grade varmint bullets in .22 and 6mm sizes, 4 coates and 4 uncoated in each caliber, that shoot as well as any and are competitively priced. See their catalog (1-800-574-9200) or website (www.barnesbullets.com).

Still I want one even if I can only get whimpy 500 grain loads!!!!!

My local gun shop has some Spike's tactical operator uppers in stock for around $1,000.00 with a Saber barrel and daniel defense rails. They also have a complete rilfe for $1,5OO.00 . I would have bought it but they are from a company called Spikes tactical and I have never heard of them? Anyone familar with them??? The rifle looks pretty sweet but I need to see if they are well built or not???

Spike builds pretty good quality guns. They're out of Apopka, FL, near Orlando, and a lot of us Florida guys own stuff from them. I don't think you'd go wrong with Spike. If you're worried, search for references on M4Carbine.net, ARFcom, and FloridaShootersNetwork. You'll find plenty of info.

You could also give them a call. They have a reputation for being friendly and helpful.
