AR15 or alternative for $1000

I can't really say much else that has been stated already. If you can wait, BCM sometimes has deals going on for uppers which come with BCGs and muzzle devices included in the price, and charging handles for a little extra. Well worth it IMO. I agree with staying away from Freedom Group stuff. IMO it's worth less hassle in the long run to cough up a couple extra hundred than deal with the headache of a finicky firearm.

There are about as many options for an AR as there is sand on beach. I bought a Diamondback DB15FDE on sale for $750-ish and it's been a great rifle. I've put about 1000 rounds through it and so far it has been top notch and the accuracy is quite good for an entry level carbine. Fit and finish also seem pretty good. My only gripe was the terrible carbine stock they come with, but that was easily and inexpensively replaced. I'd say they're worth a look if you want an out of the box rifle. They're nothing spectacular looks-wise, but the two tone finishes they offer do help you get away from the generic AR look a little bit.

Fit and finish are nice but they don't contribute to reliability. Only manufacturers who have strict quality control do. BCM is oftem forced to reject 30% of the parts offered to them because of quality issues.

If I were spending around 1000 on one right now, Here is what I would do.

1. Go to cdnnsports and get this http://www.cdnnsports.com/email-spe...mplete-w-trigger-stock-grip.html#.VCx58_ldX6M
That lower is awesome and its got a great trigger.
2. Find a PSA premium upper and get your BCG from AIM if it doesnt come with one. Its pretty easy to find Spikes uppers w/ BCG for 500. Spending a little extra on a nice charging handle is worth it IMO as well, I love my Raptor (Im a lefty).

Okay I'm just asking because I'm totally new to any builds and pretty much ARs in general. Would the only other thing I need be a charging handle?

If you find an upper listed as a "complete upper" then you shouldnt need anything else. It should include the bolt carrier group (BCG) and charging handle. Alot of uppers are sold without those 2 things. They usually dont include sights of any kind either.

This is out of a 16" M4 profile PSA Premium upper. 50gr Vmax, 1/7 twist, less than 50 rounds through it at the time. Pretty good to me for 100 yards.

What optic are you using? ARs are accurate by nature, 1" groups to me are solid out of a carbine but they can do much bette. My Spikes barrel has close to 2000 rounds through it since I cleaned it, including the bore, and can still get close to MOA at 100 using 55gr loads

That was with a 3-9x40 scope, as I have pretty crummy eyes. By no means was I claiming it was exceptional accuracy, but it is definitely on the better side of things, especially considering the cost of that upper assembly.

You should be able to come by a rock river arms or stag arms also in that price range pretty easy too.

To me, the AR-15 is overrated...The ammo is cheap but the price of the rifle doesn't fit... A friend of mine at work picked up an AR-10 for $600 which is a MUCH higher rated rifle.

I also picked up an AR-10 but for much more, it was back when prices were through the roof due to paranoia. But the ar10 is awesome, ammo is more expensive but you get so much more from the gun than those call of duty looking toy 223s.

People luck out into things. He had to buy that rifle used or someone seariously screwed up pricing on it.

As for the price, same thing with a knife or a scope or an AK, they cost as much as you want to spend on one

And are you guys talking about an actual AR10 (Armalite) or a LR308/308 AR?

There is a difference.

Sure, spend 2x as much on the gun, and 2x as much on the ammo and you can put bigger holes through paper targets. I'm a fan of the .308, but to say that the 5.56 round and AR15 is "overrated" is a lame brained argument. Everything has a purpose. If the OP planned on getting himself into a long range battle and needed something to penetrate barriers, then yes the .308 platform would be better. But for an all around, all purpose, fun to shoot rifle that won't break the bank, you cannot beat the AR15. Period.

Fixed that for you. :D

Don't overlook used....many owned firearms shot very little.

If you just want a bullet "hose" get a used AK47

I own both- just an old trigger puller- paper and colony varmints( prairie dogs) when
I get the chance...I'll leave 3-gun and >600 yards to he young guys with good eyes who can still run.

Best.

IMO, the best "cheap" AR's are the S&W M&P15 Sport and the Palmetto State Armory. If you are going to spend about $1000 get a colt. If you can afford a little more look at BCM and Daniel Defense.

Out of curiosity..How does the price of the AR-15 not "fit"? Too expensive?
I'm not being facetious or critical, but the context I think is probably important.

Probably thinks the same thing about an Anshutz or Winchester 52D.... ammo is cheap but the guns cost more than most AR15s! They're just .22!

Lol...

I know you said you didn't want to build it, but it's actually very easy and a good bit cheaper to do than buy one.
