This past week, my daughter had some time off from school and she wanted to go camping. Due to her bad knee we decided to hang around camp and practice some bush craft skills. We brought along a pair of live quail for dinner the second night and it didn’t seem right to eat quail and not make a functional bird trap. I made up an arapuca and also shot some video of how to manage live birds as a long term food source.
Here are two shots of the trap. The Arapuca has been discussed here at BF before so I won’t get into the details of constructing one. A search for “arapuca” will probably bring up the old thread. This is a live trap that can be made without tools. All that is needed is a length of cordage and various sticks. I used my machete and SAK on this one but a sharp stone can be used to grind the trigger notches on the “Y” shaped support stick.
At 5000 feet we were pretty limited as to the materials available so this trap is looking kind of gnarly. There were a lot of birds up there and we made the cordage used on the spot so it was a good test of the skills needed to eat birds up there. No, I didn’t set the trap with bait although it was tempting.

I’m having fun with the Windows Movie Maker, even learned how to add titles.
