I am considering an arbor press for my makers mark. How big a press is needed for most steels (before hardened). will a 6 ton press do the job for a 1/4 inch stamp or do I need bigger. The mark is nearly a single letter. Along with that is stamped mark deeper and longer lasting than etched? I did look in old post but could not find recommendation for size of press.

I don't know of the force required but I'm pretty sure pressing your mark will be more durable and consistent than etching. An arbor press is also a sweet tool to own for a lot of other things too. It's one of those things that can turn an epic job into a couple minutes of effort. I used one to rebuild my front wheel hub assembly. I saved $135 just for that job because I had an arbor press available to me.
