Am looking at getting arbor press for my makers mark. Is 6 ton press sufficient or should I be looking for more? I usually use stainless steel of one type or another. Makers mark is small, 3/16 inch about single letter size.

Did you purchase the stamp and if so do they have a recommendation from where you purchased the stamp? I've read some posts about this subject that the sellers recommendations were upwards of 10 tons, so depending 6 ton may not be enough.

When I stamped my blades, I used a 1 ton manual arbor press (OK, I would whack the arbor with a hammer to set the mark). I would think 6 tons would be plenty. All the force is going into the very tiny surface area of the letters. It is a tiny fraction of a square inch, thus, the applied force is well over 100,000 PSI.

I have a Harbor Freight 20 ton shop press. It is inadequate for stamping my blades. Of course the bottle jack they use in this press is just garbage.

I stamp mine on this 2.5 ton (guessing tonnage)

thanks for the advice. I have not bought the stamp yet. Has to be custom made and don't want to spend $ until I know what is feasible.

what am I missing here? I just use a hammer on my stamp mark......
i guess it's the even pressure of a press?

Hammers can make uneven marks and can "bounce" the stamp. A press places the mark exactly where you want it and makes an even and deep mark.
