Archery

I started bowhunting in '71 with a Bear Kodiak Hunter. I no longer hunt due to spinal surgery in 2004, but I loved traditional archery as long as I hunted. Everything from Howard Hill longbows to my last one, a Paul Schafer Silvertip.

I love bowhunting. It's been my thing since I was about 12, and I'm 40. I'm currently shooting a PSE Omen (29",70#), with Easton FMJ 340's, a Spott Hogg, Tight Spot quiver, and a Leupold Vendetta.

I mainly whitetail bowhunt, but like to get out and hunt other species, too. I've hunted antelope, mule deer, black bear, rio and eastern turkey, etc in the last few years. Even managed a 29-lb bobcat a season ago.

Headed back to Ontario for bear again shortly.

Nice that there are others here that like the same thing.

Just recently got a Bear compound to get to keep shooting something- ammo has ridiculous to find and afford. As an added plus I can shoot in my backyard so I've been shooting everyday! Not good enough to hunt yet, but I have a buddy ready to take me out as soon as I am.

Don't think I'll ever go for a bear with a bow, though! For those who do, have you seen the Toxic broadheads? My buddy is quite excited about them.

Why would you never hunt bear with your bow? Its one of the funnest things out there to bow hunt.

MVF,

Sorry, I know they look really cool, but I wouldn't touch those with a 10ft. pole. A good two or three blade, cut on contact broadhead with a 3:1 ratio is a much better choice in my opinion, despite the marketing machine doing their best to try and convince everyone that the broadhead can still be re-invented every year, and given a hip name like "toxic" or "zombie" or whatever... Just my .02.

I agree with Smithhammer. I've been doing this a long time, and have found what he says above to be true. I would encourage you to look at Magnus and Slick Trick broadheads, for their flight, strength, and reliability.

I enjoy hunting with a bow, even if I don't get an animal. I have been so close to deer and elk that I could almost touch them, but still couldn't get a shot.
Being that close to animals and being able to listen to them, and watch them, when they don't know you are there, is a huge part of the sport...

Most rifle hunters will never get to experience that feeling. I like to score just as much as the next guy, but there is more to the sport than just shooting an animal.
Besides, archery is fun....

Re: the Toxic broadheads, I haven't looked at them. Find something that flies well, and is effective. I have been shooting Rocky Mountain Ti 100's for the last 8-9 years.
They work great, and I still have 3 dozen or so, so I won't be switching anytime soon.

Well said, Mike.

Hey there - traditional archery for me (mostly for whitetail but also for squirrels, rabbits, whatever).

That's me with my Howard Hill Halfbreed - 60@29 with two inner laminations of bamboo and two outter laminations of Yew.

Cuz bears scare the sh*t outta me? Saw a video of a guy bear hunting with a bow- bear sussed him and came right at him. He never had a shot at anything but the top of the bear's head. Luckily, his buddy took the bear with a slug, but in CA, you're not allowed to have a firearm if you're bowhunting

No need to be scared of a black bear unless you mess with their cubs.

^^^^^^^^^^I don't believe that for a minute^^^^^^^^ more people killed by black bears than browns.

I hunt with traditional equipment, stick and a string and mostly flint points on grey stemmed dogwood shafts.

I never even thought about using a compound, always shot a recurve or longbow.

We are all entitled to our own opinions, I have been face to face with many black bear with only bow in hand and they are more afraid of you than you are of them.

I have been bow hunting since 1990, had various bows along the way. Currently I own a 2006 Bowtech Alligence and just got a 2013 PSE Drive. I cut & fletch my own on Beeman ICS hunter shafts, slight offset Blazer vanes with a Bitzenburger jig. I hunt whitetails with a turkey here & there tossed in the mix. I no longer shoot 3D as it became to much of a hassle and I hate cheaters. I love bowhunting and gave up the rifles with the exception of my traditional muzzleloaders. All of my bow hunting is down on the ground with spot & stalk. Ocassionally I will wait by a tree on an actvie trail...and wait. Love the sport of bowhunting.

Just getting into the sport. Picked up a Bowtech insanity at 60lbs and loving it. I get so much more enjoyment shooting my bow then shooting my guns.

I'd like to get in to bowhunting. In my neck of the woods, primitive comes in early and since I don't shoot blackpowder, a bow would get me out there a month or so earlier.

Any good tips for getting started? Sorry if I'm thread-jacking.

Sulaco,
If you do not get an animal in the early season, can you bowhunt in the rifle season?

Yes we can bow hunt throughout the season. Our "primitive" season is pretty short, but being at the beginning of the year, chances of getting a deer are much higher. Some of our counties are in season from September 15th through January 1st. Where I hunt most of the time it comes in Oct. 1st.

I had a compound bow and developed adequate accuracy for 20 yds.
Compound bow got stolen. Lately, I researched primitive/traditional and
was enjoying the Youtube bow building projects. However, I then saw
indications that these bows break more than I originally suspected:
no statistics are available.

So, I thought about a lower pound new or used p/t factory made bow and
there are some good deals out there. I would prefer to make my own gear,
for enjoyment and cost saving.

I am pro-hunting; but have no need to hunt, at present.
Developing hunting-ready skills seems like it would be fun and practical.

+2

Past 3 years in a row I've had a bull elk within 15-30 yards of me and couldn't get a shot for various reasons. Very exhilerating! :)

Mathews MQ1, Whisker Biscuit and Gold Tip carbon arrows, love them. Recently started practicing with a Hoyt/Easton recurve, but i'm not yet competent and confident enough with it to take it hunting.

Reusable bullets!
