Last weekend I was at a large knife show in Solingen. I saw an old knife that I haven't seen before. The seller let me take photo's and even showed me an old advertisement.

He called it an "Architects knife"
Besides a knife blade it had a thick square rod to open doors when the door handle has been pulled out and a screw driver blade with a large square hole to open windows with.

Have you ever seen this before?

(please forgive the poor pics, I did the best I could)

It is nr.2261 in the advertisement.
It translates to: special knife for building/construction technicians

I have not saw an Architects Knife before, that is very interesting. The large square block blade is truly unique. I have saw some US made knives with a blade containing the square hole, which were used for Prest-o-Light headlights on early US made vehicles, such as the Ford Model T. The Prest-o-Light headlights were common from around 1907-1914 where electric headlamps started to become popular.

My parents bought a house a couple of years before I was born. On the first floor landing, there was a closet under the attic stairs, which had a loose door-handle. It always came out, when you tried to open the door, because it needed a nut on the inside. As a child my mother always told me that my dad was going to fix it. He worked in a large engineering factory, and finding the right nut would have taken little effort (in a pinch, it could have been fixed in any number of ways). The issue came up regularly, and since I used the closet as a wardrobe, it was a constant source of annoyance. Many years later, I started work myself. The door knob still hadn't been fixed. I asked my mother if she wanted me to fix it. She told me, "That's your Dad's job." 🫣
