Ok another fictional what if thread.....

What knife would be your knife of choice in an Arctic survival scenario.
Given that tasks may include filleting fish, cutting ice holes, constructing a shelter(igloo/snow cave)and maybe attempting to defend yourself(no chance)against polar bears etc !!!
You can only pick one blade and it must be a production knife !:D

Interesting answers..you see for igloo making and such I would imagine a long thin blade, something along the lines of the Kershaw Outcast to work best but then obviously it would not be ideal for filleting fish and such like !!!

Swamprat M6, or a busse Hellrazor if I had one. If I could carry a smaller knife too I'd carry my Case small side slab hunter.

I'd have to go with a Leuku. They've been in Alaska for a very long time, doing just the kinda jobs you mentioned.

One like this perhaps:http://www.ragweedforge.com/5229.jpg

Oddly enough, I was just packing my bag to go out venturing in the mountains with my brother. One of the first items in my bag was my Helle Lapplander.:D

Well as a kid who grew up ice climbing in Alaska I know a thing or two about artic survival. I would go with a busse with there largest magnum hnadle scales for a good easy grip with gloves. I would stay away from silly saw teeth unless they are Jimmy Lile style and even then they will get gummed up with ice no doubt. For ice fishing you generally need a auger. If you going through it with a knife you will be chipping not sawing (speaking of the ice up here, may be thinner elsewhere). I have made igloos and it is much better to make pieces for it than to try and carve out each one, but without a few days you are not going to build an igloo, its to much work. Digging an ice cave is easier and provides a consistent temperature inside. IF y9ou have to dig an ice cave with a knife, I pity you. Bring a small shovel into the artic, always.

Yeah, Randall makes some nice knives but a 5+yrs. waiting list? Last year I cancelled my Randall orders that was due in 2008...just got tired of waiting and lost the mystic Randallphillia mania I once had. I still have 4 Randalls (3 regular models and 1 mini) but I am not likely to ever order another one.

Just my opinion,

Scott,
you better get back to work. to much time on your hands for that detailed answer. lol

Gotta agree with you there Ron. The prices on fleabay have just gone outa sight too. I may pick one up if its right in front of me and the price is right.

I believe the ones I make are every bit as good. I would've said those, but the thread starter wanted a production knife!

No Kidding! I'm at my "day job" though so the knifemaking isn't suffering, luckilly!

I can watch the plant (which isn't online today anyway) and type at the same time!

(BTW Mike- your stuff shipped this am)

12 or 14 inch sawback machete. Cuts snow/ice for igloo, and hey, a 4 inch will be worthless for flensing a whale.

Something including few kilos of chocolate, warm coat and racon with BIG battery  :D

And it could have mirror polished blade, so one could use it as a signal mirror :D

I attended a Survival school near fairbanks ak, in dec 05 light snow and -35 F. Not enough to make a proper shelter so it was a little chilly...

I took my HR. It worked good, many of the instructors carried a CS SRK and liked it. A little more knife wouldn't of hurt, M6 / RW.
