i heard someone say that not all of the battle rats where differentially tempered,is this true and how do you know which ones are and which ones arent.

just got my first one.black with tan res-c.

Yours is thru-tempered. Only the all-black and all-tan are diff-tempered, IIRC.

I dunno about Battle Guards.

Diff tempered means the blade is harder than the spine. Makes the knife more durable in whacking and such.

Would a regular Busse/Swamp/Scrapper user notice the difference??? Nah.

The list of diff-tempered Rat knives is small. Most are thru-hardened. I sold off a great tan/black BR 2 yrs ago b/c of that concern. Cost me to get one (black/black - heavily used) back 18 months later. Dumb dumb dumb.

Same basic reply as over at the SY forum:

Color tells the tale.

The black Battle Rats with tan Res-C handles (black coating/tan handles) were through hardened.

The black Battle Rats with black Res-C handles (black coating/black handles) were differentially heat treated.

There were also a tan/tan (Desert) Battle Rat and an "LE" version in satin. Much harder to find, those two were differentially heat treated as well.

I asked Eric about the difference once. He said something like you'd only notice the difference under the most extreme usage conditions--e.g. if you had to hammer the spine repeatedly over a prolonged period with a hammer or rock.
