Basically can you tell where the Spyderco was made based on the steel?
VG-10, ZDP, ETC = Japan
S30V = USA
Bird Stuff = China
AUS stuff = Japan and Taiwan

It's also usually stamped on the blade on the opposite side from where the steel type is stamped.

It's always stamped, correct, but is every single S30V model U.S. made or did they export the steel to Japan and make some there?

When purchasing knives they often do not state where it was made, and for us online shoppers there is no way to tell from most photos.

My motives are purely curiosity.

I believe the S30Vs are all made in Golden, Colorado. so were the CPM440Vs and the ATS34s (Terzuola).

All S30Vs and 440Vs I have and have seen say "Made In Golden, Colorado", or, lately (and more creatively), say "Made In Golden, Colorado, USA, Earth." I think that's a nice touch.

Yes, and no. As has been pointed out, all S30V and 440V knives are/were Golden made. BUT while the majority of GIN-1 and ATS-34 Spydercos were made in Japan, a few models were made in Golden using those steels, and the ATS-34 C22 Carbon Fiber Michael Walker was made in Switzerland.

I heard it was somewhere near Middle Earth....

thing is, i have no idea where Middle Earth is either.....

the "Earth" stamp is a good identifier too, gotta watch out for those cheapo Betelgusian and Vogon-produced knives, utter crap

;)

Deacon I'm not so sure what the numbers are in regard to the ATS-34 bladed models from Japan, Taiwan & Switzerland. I am looking through some old catalogs here and I have found several more models made in Golden that were made with ATS-34. The following were Golden Made models were indeed ATS-34 blade steel.

The Centofante II C-25 & C-50 models
The first run C-36 Military models
The C-15 & C-19 TerZoula models
The C-66 Vesuvius model
And there were several of those models made here in the USA. I don't know exactly what the numbers are but there were quite a few ATS-34 models made in Golden. Also remember that the Titanium Salsa was an ATS-34 model made in Taiwan
