Well, just as the title says; all the pic's on websites look like the grind is otherwise. Then I saw a note saying the the pic has not been updated. Thanks for the help.

I just saw Kabar's site... I guess so! Thanks Chameleonbear, too.

There are Saber 16's but you're not likely to find them NIB from a dealer. Current production is FFG.

Of course, if you happen across a Saber, snag it! Plenty of Beckerheads will gladly buy it from you. ;)

I was able to locate a new in box, saber ground, roll stamped last week. It took some strategic approaching of a bunch of different vendors until I was onto a good lead. I have a second one coming next week, etched but not signature series.

Yes.

The FFG grind cuts better, anyway, so I'm glad they make 'em that way now.

Other than "pure collector value" I do not understand why the sabre-ground 16's are so highly sought-after. But then, I'm not a collector. *shrug*

I'll snag it for you guys, if I see it! Otherwise, I'll be getting the 16 ffg. I have the 14, which I love, and a TGLB has replaced my bk7, so I'm looking for a 4 inch blade. I had the 17, but didn't like the grind (though I love clip points). The 16 looks perfect, all around.

Here's my 14:

OK Beckerheads, I'm in for one more... just ordered the 16. This time, I went with the micarta scales. As much as I like the wooden ones from Tommythewho, I went with what I think will be the more grippy micarta. Since I'm traveling, I'll stick with the stock sheath for now and get kydex when I get back home. I will strip the blade right away; among the many things I intend to cut, food/ meat is one of them--and bare steel is the way to go in my book.

Thanks again for the quick response! I'll post pics when I get it and strip it.

Anthony

Good job on the order Aias. I love the ffg on the 16. It's my go to blade currently. I'm a big fan of the ffg with a convexed edge. Just works so good for so many things.

Other than being a sexy grind, it's probably mostly because they are hard to find. As soon as you tell people they can't have something, everyone wants it.......'Merica!

That said.....I worked hard to hunt two of them down to complete my tweener collection, so I am a total hypocrite there. The ffg 16 is my goto slicey Becker though; that or the 15. I can get my 15 and ffg16 stupid sharp.

I'm hoping to get a 16 soon and was wondering; are the amazon ones really FFG? I saw in another older thread someone said that they used the wrong picture, but if I order it from there would I still get a BK16?

Thanks--slicy is just what I'm going for!

We will find out just what the great South American river will spew forth... in about 2 days. ;)

Stay tuned.

Yes, it will be FFG. They don't know how to change a picture I guess. lol

There are a few Sabers that got mixed in with the FFG's and were shipped out to some dealers.

But the chances of that happening now are about 1 in a couple thousand.

And I can tell you that the Amazon people most likely wouldn't know the difference between the two even if one did show up.

So you will get a FFG BK-16 because that is what the current production model is.

Great knife for sure. I do prefer the Saber for a woods knife, but use the FFG mostly, Especially in the Kitchen. And I have 5 of each.

Good luck!

^^...What Dex said....same with the auction sites. I have actually talked to most of the sellers listing 16's, and most of them don't actually know anything about the product, it's just another catalogue item number, and copy and paste pictures and descriptions. When you let them know there are different grind versions, they still don't get it for the most part. All the 16's being sold new now are ffg's regardless of what picture they may have pasted in.

Dex,
I know you have a lot of the 16s, why do you prefer the saber for woods work?

True that the Full Flat grind is slicer but the Saber does have a lot more meat on it's bones so to speak.

So if I am going out in the woods and plan on really using a knife, I just feel more comfortable knowing that it is gonna take what ever I Give it.

What I am saying I guess, is that I feel a lot more comfortable pushing the saber ground version a little harder than the FFG. It's beefier and can take more abuse in my mind.

If I needed to use it to baton down a small tree to make shelter or what ever, I would have no worries where with the FFG I may tend to Baby it. Not that the FFG can't do the job perfectly well, I just trust the Saber a little more.

And it could all be in my head but I know for a fact that the saber ground is more substantial in terms of metal. Especially at the tip. I would use the saber to dig in to a log or pry wood open with out even hesitating, where as the FFG, in the back of my mind I would just be waiting for the tip to snap. haha
Like I said, It's probably just a visual thing in my head. My mind automatically believes the Saber is tougher so therefore I trust my instincts.

I do feel the Saber batons small kindling and stuff better as well.

But I would have no problems taking a FFG as my primary knife if I didn't have the Saber Versions.

If I was going long term in the woods, I would probably like to take both. One for food prep and similar tasks and the other for heavier tasks.

Not to mention the Saber looks so much better than the FFG.

I do have to say that the FFG is balanced perfect and has a great weight to it. Like you could use it all day long. Don't have a small scale but I know the Saber feels slightly heavier.

I am considering grinding off the spin on a 16 kinda like the 15 just to use in the kitchen.

The 16 (which ever version) is in my opinion a far more comfortable and balanced knife than any other in that size that I have compared it to.

The Bravo 1 has a similar blade shape and size but just feels awful in the hand and is too thick in my opinion.

The TOPS BOB is a great knife and has a similar blade size and shape, but the handle is way to long and has a horrible balance. I do like my BOB but need to mod the handle and shorten it before I will ever use it again.

The ESEE 4 is a great knife too, but the 16 blows it away as far as handle comfort and balance. If ESEE would lengthen the handle just a little, do some cut outs in the tang to get the balance right, and contour the scales a little, then it may compare to the 16. I am not dissing my ESEE 4, I do love it, just saying it's not even close to being as well of a designed knife as the 16.

Kinda went of on a tangent there about the 16, but I really do think it's a fantastic knife and one of the most practical knives in the Becker line up.
The BK-11 and BK-16 are my two most used knives.
