Dex,
I know you have a lot of the 16s, why do you prefer the saber for woods work?
True that the Full Flat grind is slicer but the Saber does have a lot more meat on it's bones so to speak.
So if I am going out in the woods and plan on really using a knife, I just feel more comfortable knowing that it is gonna take what ever I Give it.
What I am saying I guess, is that I feel a lot more comfortable pushing the saber ground version a little harder than the FFG. It's beefier and can take more abuse in my mind.
If I needed to use it to baton down a small tree to make shelter or what ever, I would have no worries where with the FFG I may tend to Baby it. Not that the FFG can't do the job perfectly well, I just trust the Saber a little more.
And it could all be in my head but I know for a fact that the saber ground is more substantial in terms of metal. Especially at the tip. I would use the saber to dig in to a log or pry wood open with out even hesitating, where as the FFG, in the back of my mind I would just be waiting for the tip to snap. haha
Like I said, It's probably just a visual thing in my head. My mind automatically believes the Saber is tougher so therefore I trust my instincts.
I do feel the Saber batons small kindling and stuff better as well.
But I would have no problems taking a FFG as my primary knife if I didn't have the Saber Versions.
If I was going long term in the woods, I would probably like to take both. One for food prep and similar tasks and the other for heavier tasks.
Not to mention the Saber looks so much better than the FFG.
I do have to say that the FFG is balanced perfect and has a great weight to it. Like you could use it all day long. Don't have a small scale but I know the Saber feels slightly heavier.
I am considering grinding off the spin on a 16 kinda like the 15 just to use in the kitchen.
The 16 (which ever version) is in my opinion a far more comfortable and balanced knife than any other in that size that I have compared it to.
The Bravo 1 has a similar blade shape and size but just feels awful in the hand and is too thick in my opinion.
The TOPS BOB is a great knife and has a similar blade size and shape, but the handle is way to long and has a horrible balance. I do like my BOB but need to mod the handle and shorten it before I will ever use it again.
The ESEE 4 is a great knife too, but the 16 blows it away as far as handle comfort and balance. If ESEE would lengthen the handle just a little, do some cut outs in the tang to get the balance right, and contour the scales a little, then it may compare to the 16. I am not dissing my ESEE 4, I do love it, just saying it's not even close to being as well of a designed knife as the 16.
Kinda went of on a tangent there about the 16, but I really do think it's a fantastic knife and one of the most practical knives in the Becker line up.
The BK-11 and BK-16 are my two most used knives.
