are fanny packs out?

I dont see to many people using fanny packs anymore...

It all depends on what works for you. I personally won't use a fanny pack because they just don't work for me. Use what works for you, what feels best when you pack it with gear and put it on. Shoulder-type bags work best for me, so that's what I'm sticking with.

There's two kinds of men in the world: those that don't care what they look like, and those whom women will actually talk to. Let me guess which kind you guys are :)

Ha ha! I'm kidding of course, but the zinger was too easy :). Seriously though, for most people, "do what you want" will be balanced by "and try not to look too much like a dork doing it." Perfectly normal and healthy. Me, if I can look in the mirror and be happier with what I see, while not horribly sacrificing utility and comfort, well, that's the way I'm going.

In this case, the REI Mini I suggested is actually more comfortable than the fatboy and, IMO, an overall better solution than the Fatboy (or a fanny pack, for that matter), even disregarding the fact that it looks so much cooler. Lookin' good is just a side benefit. Now I gotta go get me a stick to beat the chicks off, when I wear it :) :) Well, okay, maybe they at least won't roll their eyes when I walk by.

I am currently investigating compact camera cases for this very purpose. Black if I can find it, brown if I can't. Nylon is more versatile, but I'm open to leather as well.

Duluth Trading Bucket Boss Digi-Bag. It's a camera bag with a single main compartment and a front pocket that's divided up for smaller items.

Big belt loops, a carry handle, and a shoulder strap, which can be used as a belt to make the bag a big fat fanny pack if you like.

depends on where I am as to what I carry my stuff in. general idea is use what works for the situation.

Running around the city, or to and from work, I have it all in a softsided laptop bag... little big but will hold pretty much anything. One of the guys at work called it a purse for about a month, then he realized that I could carry 2x the stuff his backpack held.

if I'm heading somewhere and have no idea what I'm doing, I toss the essentials in a camera pouch and put it on my belt. Small and doesn't cause too many stares.

Out in the bush, I have 2 leather belt pouches... one is a first aid kit, the other is a custom job I got last summer... 6"x8"x2.5", with the loop an inch from the top... looks like a saddlebag. Holds the essentials, and a day or so worth of food. Yes I get a few looks if I run into a town or city for supplies with it on my belt, but it's easier than tossing it all in my pockets.

That was a zinger? Better reload and take another shot! Don't worry, we'll hold still. ;)

Seriously, what the people around you consider "dorky" all depends on the circumstances - and the people.

If I wear jeans, a Sebenza T-shirt, boots, and my Fatboy at Blade-2005 in June I'll probably be considered "cool" (geez, people still say "cool"?). But if I show up wearing a navy Brioni suit and a shirt and tie, I'm sure most people there would stare and say, "Dork".

But if I wear that same Fatboy to lunch with some clients this week, THEY would think it looks "dorky". ("Army Medic" is the response I usually get.)

Which leads me back to our original comments: wear what you like and what you need and forget about what is "still in". :)

After reading numerous positive reports about the Fatboy, I finally found an excuse to buy one. I'm headed to Costa Rica in late March and I figured it'd be great for short hikes or walks around the city. I haven't had an opportunity to actually use it yet, but just filling it with stuff and walking around my apartment has made me really love it. I also wanted to add to what Ritt had said. He stated that the new S-type fatboy has a loop on the back for attachment to a belt. I just wanted to add that the "old style" fatboy has the same thing. I never understood why some women love purses and bags, but now I think I understand.

I have two other bags that are similar. One is a fanny pack and this I use for the gym. I live in manhattan and I don't like to leave stuff locked in my locker at the gym, therefore the fanny pack carries my iPod, workout gloves, apartment keys, gym ID, and a couple of dollars. I wear the fanny pack under my t-shirt and don't worry to much about looking like a dork in the gym.

My other bag is a camelbak Hawg. I got this as a day pack for hiking (for around here and also for Costa Rica). I figured this would be a step up from the Fatboy because it has much more carrying capacity. It could carry a couple of lunches (for me and my girlfriend), a raincoat, longsleeve shirt, first aid kit, etc. Basically, it could fit much larger things or just a larger quantity of stuff.

Overall, I like the Fatboy and Hawg a lot, but will have to wait to provide a further more in-depth review (as I haven't gotten to extensively use either yet).

I guess I still see the usefulness of a fannypack, but I like my fatboy and camelbak much better.

I wore one a few times and didn't like the quality, look, comfort, capacity among other things. The cheaper ones can be pulled and ripped off you.It also screams I have a concealed pistol in my fanny pack to alot of people.I've been considering getting a Fatboy for my surburban/urban carry.

This is a warning. Keep it up and you're going to force me to buy an REI Mini. ;)

Dont really care if they are in or out... they scream tourist in metropolitan area's!

Well I just returned from Florida, and its many theme parks.I saw 100's of maybe 1,000's of fanny packs, zero Fatboys. They may be out with gear freaks, but the masses still use them. And so do I one holds my Glock when out on the boat and so on.

Everyday I wear one at the gym.I do not trust the lockers,so my keys, knife, wallet, E2E and cell ride in my fanny pack.I like the fact that it rides flat and one can workout with it on. When I do cardio it hangs from the machine.

I also like the fact that when out and about a sweatshirt hides it with ease.

People definitely wear fanny packs, but they do look dorky IMO. Particularly if you have a big belly, or if the fanny pack is really big. You don't see Fatboys out, but you do find some people (particularly style-conscious younger folks, but others as well) wearing courrier type shoulder bags.

I tend to wear a small fanny pack when I just need to carry a few extra things, and I'm wearing my shirt out to cover it. For lots of stuff, over-the-shoulder tends to look and work better, IMO.

Hi All-

Several posters have mentioned trying to "cover" the fannypack. This is something that can't be done...it looks like someone is merely trying to cover a HUGE cystic growth with a sweatshirt or a jacket.

Why not just wear the fannypack as the outermost garment/accessory? This is much in the same way that a person wouldn't wear a Fatboy beneath their coat, either. The idea is that the bag carts all your stuff in reasonable security while also being somewhat accessible.

Blue,

When I wear my fannypack under my shirt, I don't wear it in front, where it would look like a big tumor. I spin the fanny pack around to my actual fanny, where my t-shirt covers it, and you can't even tell I'm carrying it.

I have a Lowe Waist Case and I love it. It's more properly called a lumbar pack than a fanny, but I usually just carry it by its handle or sling it over my shoulder with the included (wimpy) shoulder strap. If you do choose to strap it on properly, its very comfortable and stable.

For $20, you can't beat it IMHO!

Wear/use what you like and what YOU are comfortable with.

Cool. Uncool. Old. New. Fancy. Plain. Who cares! :)

I've seen both extremes of this behaviour. A girlfriend who came sea kayaking with me and forgot her sunglasses. I had a bulky bug eyed pair of safety glasses in the truck that were 100% UV rated. She would not wear them. Even though there were no fashion police out in the ocean that I could see, she prefered to spend the whole day squinting and taking a step closer to cataracts than be seen with those ole things on her face. The same girl refused to carry my daypack one time when we were hiking because it looked to 'bulky and dorky'. She wasn't a princess however and enjoyed most outdoor adventures - I got to admire her dedication to looking cool at all times as an ethic in itself, wether there was anyone to see her or not.

The other extreme is a mate of mine who is a tad OCD and will not go to a pub, nightclub or concert without wearing industrial sized ear muffs - and wonders why he can't pickup women

I think bum bags are dorky and scream 'tourist' by the way :D
