Are knife magazines truly made for the knife community?

Hmmmm, guys, I was not fishing for compliments when I began this Thread.
But thanks!

Being serious enough to have collected over the years everything published on
custom knives - BEFORE I created the concept for my books and then actually
went for it and made them, finalized quite a clear idea what IMO was missing
on MY BOOK SHELF.... That is how it all began.

My initial post was made because of mixed feelings of frustration from not
understanding. In one case I did speak to the editor about the reviews but got
vague answers that IMO left hope....

I do hope that no offense was taken anywhere as I truly respect the fact that
an editor can and will do everything for the best of his magazine AND his readers.

I enjoy having my books so much that I hope to go on doing some more, one every
year as long as I can....

Thanks again and all the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I have to agree with Trace,

I have not (yet) been pressured to advertise in connection with editorial, though it would stand to reason that advertisers would receive deference at some level.

TK contacted me (a non-advertiser at the time) about my EDC and offered to look it over for a story. After some delay (I was all out of knives at the time), I sent them one, they wrote it up and sent it back. There was no pressure to advertise in connection with this coverage (which was a generous spread in color, etc.) Sept. '08 issue.

I said this already and it seems that I should say it again:

I did not send "Tactical Knives" any of the 4 books from my first series.

Steven Dick of "Tactical Knives" received a copy of Edmund Davidson's book
at the BLADE Show, and will have it reviewed in his January 2009 issue!

No strings attached!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Well, nothing in Brownshoe's words threatened Dr. D's kumbaya, a misnomer because it implies false flattery. A better word is respect, which Dr. D. has so richly earned here with intelligent posts covering a wide mix of custom knives and makers punctuated by consistently brilliant photos.

No one defends uncensored review/criticism more than me, and no one defends uncensored rebuttal more than me. Fitting rebuttal in this case is the shredder or the crapper, because the criticism that Dr. D.'s writing is askance, his scope too narrow, and his photography lacking is ridiculous and odious.

Further, with books of this stature, any legitimate magazine owes its subscribers news of the book's arrival and a brief review, whether it or its perceived readership likes or dislikes the book. I refuse to believe that reviewing/promoting any inspirational, quality book will not generate interest and grow the market.

And even if a publisher has no book review section or reviewer, he/she should outsource for an article to be written. Otherwise, outsource for a tatoo on the forehead that just says "STUPID".

It was with a feeling of incredulity that I read the brownshoe post. I found it to be pretty nasty, and not quite in keeping with the generally positive scene we all have going in here.
However, it's very much in keeping with brownshoes' usual posts - much heat, low light.

If the magazines have any interest in letting the public know what is available out there they would have at least made a mention about the books. It may not have even been a review but at least let people know they are available and then the public can decide the quality. If they had done this I would have been able to purchase the first book when it came out rather than not knowing the books were even available until the first one had sold out. It took me months to finally find a copy. The mags should keep its readers abreast of what is new and available on the market even if they don't like it. IMHO that is part of being a good magazine. I believe that was also part of Dr. D's issue with them. By the way, the books are GREAT!!

Ken's post says it all, and is very well written to boot. The 3rd paragraph is particularly true.

There are many posts here that I am much in agreement with, but I think Ken Williams' post articulated my sentiments very well.

I just received an email from Mr. Darom, and I will attest to his commitment to the custom/handmade knife field, and to his generosity.

David, you are indeed a huge asset to the field, and I have no doubt that in the big picture, you will leave a legacy to future generations of custom/handmade knife fanciers.
I think that it is ridiculous that your books haven't received the coverage they deserve from the magazines.

I think that they might be jealous;)

Thank you Lorien. ;) (..hehehaha) just kidding. I do agree!
Its no surprise Ken's post is the fitting response. he is THE most articulate of any who have ever entered this cockfight, which is Bladeforums.

I say Bladeforums should have its own "Kenforum".. a subforum. Or else, rename it altogether. We can not hope to compete our wits and blade-smarts with this lovable magnanmous gorilla.

Well Doctor David Darom, I hear you. Blade has not been oriented towards me for over eight years and I quit Knives Illustrated after Bud Lang was uncerimoniuosly "let go". I look at the knife magazines if I am at the bookstore that carries them but I feel nothing if a years worth of issues go by that I haven't got to look at or read. I love your book on Fixed Blades. I was very crestfallen when I found out the Edmund Davidson book was not going to be widely avalible. I will be doing without the pleasure of looking at that one, even though I was excited to for a long time after hearing about it. Good Luck to you in your endevors!

All you have to do is call/e-mail/write Edmund....and he will most likely sell you a copy....he seemed to enjoy the interaction with people at Blade.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Actually, I 'm a bit surprised that Edmund has not created a tab for ordering his book online from his website. That way the question of widely available would not be an issue.
