Have any of you guys noticed a growth in interest of knives? Mods has there been a increase in members on the forum?

I'm no Mod. I don't carry a knife because it might be trendy. I carry one to cut things when necessary.

I don't know that they're trendy...if anything, my guess would be that they've grown less 'trendy' or socially acceptable in the past 50-70 years than they have ever been in ages past, what with the widespread restrictions on carrying, using, and owning them, plus the permeation of the "knives = weapons = evil" type of attitude that seems to be so very common.

...but now we're talking some kind of sociology nonsense!

I doubt that there's much of an upward trend in knife ownership. Hopefully, more people are realizing how handy it is to have a cutting tool on them for day-to-day tasks. I particularly love it when someone asks why I carry a knife after I've just gotten done using it right in front of them.

I don't know anyone else who carries a knife or shows an interest in them, but then again i don't know many people, either way i rarely see any pocket knife clips on people in my area so i don't think it is a growing trend, at least here in the bay area of CA.

I like trying to get people who are close to me to carry a knife, like my younger sister carries a spyderco squeek she loves and i convinced another friend of mine to get a paramilitary 2 some while back and he has used it a lot.

The only people iv'e seen carrying knives weren't carrying anything too good, stuff like S&W folders, and they didn't know about brands like spyderco, benchmade, ect. when i asked them about their knife interests. Once i saw this girl at a mall carrying some no name brick of a folder in her rear pocket, i deduced that she was carrying that thing as some sort of fashion statement because it looked useless lol.

Knifesters - the next Hipster craze. Hmmmm, I'll take it. Anything to raise interest and knowledge in responsible carry and use of cutlery works for me.

I don't think there is a change. Did you maybe change locations/habits and are now seeing new people? Because you'd be surprised at how many places are knife friendly and how many aren't.

Sure with kids and suburban and urban commandos. Not making a joke, butbeing serious.

When I grew up everyone carried a knife, even teachers in school. Over time folks moved to the suburbs and cities and knives fell out of favor. Now I see kids and backyard comandos getting into them again. I think the fact that makers have models called zombie whatever says where the new market is. Youth and backyard commandos.

Although lots of hobbyists in bushcrafting and farming, etc out there....so there is other hobbyists coming around too.

Either way any interest in knifes along a legal avenue is a good thing. For the makers and us.

I'm squarely a product of 90's and pretty much what you would consider a hipster; young, liberal, and wearing a lot of sweaters. I also happen to be obsessed with knives, and I can tell you that knives are most certainly not trendy. I have ONE friend who is very nominally into knives, but he is content with a Skyline I gave him.

I think it's pretty interesting that makers like Jens Anso, who makes the hippest, least tactical knives, is actually one of the most sort after knife makers. To me, Jens Anso actually is a knife hipster. He's the IKEA of knives (minus the terrible build quality).

No. Knives have been popular forever. I joined our local knife club in 1980.

I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary. The only people I really ever see with clips on the pocket are some of the vets in my class. If anything I think people are frieghted by them due to recent and not so recent events. I had a small sebenza in the past and was even skeptical to use this in certain public areas as well as my PT. However, it does have a lot to do with your current environs. It sure would be great though if it was the new trend though...or would it?

I believe there is an uptick in what I would call The Hemingway Hipster Way of Life. For the past 8-10 years there's been a lot of (urban) attraction to the idea of manlihood - venturing into the woods in a plaid shirt and full beard to chop some wood.

Brands like Freeman's Sporting Club, Best Made, ACL, Huckberry, all cater to this crowd. I guess with that comes the fascination with pipes, flasks, lights, axes and knives.

There also seems to be a lot of traction in the tacticool brands like TAD and Aether. For those who'd spend $2000+ on an adventurous trip to Mount Tam.

Granted I'm fairly young, when compared to some members. But to me it seems like knives hold a relatively stable number of users and enthusiasts, but it is susceptible to the fads and culture of the time. The people who jump on the Zombie Branded knives, are more or less the same group that would have jumped on the Rambo style knife. Not to discount the quality of some of those models, but the marketing is aimed at the same group.

I still see a lot of "Oh emm gee! Why do you carry a pocket knife? Do you need to stab someone that often!?" sort of posts online. People often fail to see the utility purpose of a knife, and simply see it as a weapon.

Knives are not trendy or popular; being prepared or responsible obviously isn't important to most people.

Knife ownership and use is more frowned upon now than any time in history.
