I think the trendy factor is seen in lots of similar ways....trucks, hunting dogs, guard dogs, firearms, knives, swords, machetes. I think many men grew up with absent or disengaged dads and in today's more mobile society they were often far from uncles and grandpa's or those men were absent for one reason or another. So you have grown up boys trying to figure out what being a man is, at that point it is about like having a fully built house and trying to add a foundation under it. Guys will try this and try that to prop up their concept of what being a 'real' man is. It is a danger to our nation having so many men whose concept of themselves is built on objects and symbols instead of solid role models of men who use their brains, hands and tools to take care of their responsibilities to their wife and family if that is what life leads them to. You can puts boots on their feet and set them on a horse but they ain't a cowboy until they've eaten a cow pie or two while castrating calves. Men need to work through challenges with the guidance of a dad or safe older guy who is not going to turn on them or use them someday. Yeah, trendiness is what marketing firms watch for along with holes in our character so if it is baggy pants, shiny tactical knives or the latest techie gadget there is a person who thinks it will make them into something they aren't yet. Hollow men and women is what results, chasing things and not learning how to live.
