Are limited productions really limited?

When the R-2 came out, they said that only 600 of the PE and 600 of the SE were made but to this day, I have seen them at every gunshow and can still buy them at many places online. For a total production of only 1200, there seems to be a lot of them!

In fact, I am almost sure there were more than 1200 produced but I can't prove it. What is up with those figuires? Are they for real or was another run released?

I thought if a run sold well, they would do more. I haven't seen the R-2 in Fayetteville yet, so maybe there are just a bunch in Fort Wayne.

That is a good question, how would you know for sure the limit is true?

Well, there are two possible explanations. One is that the R-2 was supposed to be limited, but the decision was made to change it to regular production.

The far more likely scenario is that it was a poor seller, and there are still plenty around. Most dealers bought stockpiles of the R-2 assuming it would have the same appeal as the original R, and it didn't even come close. It doesn't seem to be all that popular of a knife.

The R2 got a big yawn from a lot of buyers...actually 1200 is quite a batch...basically a normal production run quanity. So 600 (1/2 PE, 1/2 SE) is a half regular run of knives. That is a fairly large run for a Sprint run.

Add a large run with many yawners and you get a sleeper.

PE sells best for some silly reason...so buy those first if you are into speculating.

You can still find quite a bit of discontinued or sprint run spydies in many stores. Sometimes they just don't sell that quickly. 1200 is a bigger run then you'd think. My wife bought me a blue lum chinese folder this last christmas, without the help of our friends at Spyderco I might add. It was still available in a store.

In discussions about redoing a past model, Sal has always been very mindful about the collector value of the past run. With every re-run, one or more aspects of the original knife had to be changed; color, materials etc... Plus, us Spydie fans are usually quite well informed about new production runs. I would be very surprised if the production of the R2 was 'silently' prolonged.

You don't have other guarantees than the credibility of the person/company. Just like in wine production, it is a matter of honesty on the part of the maker and a matter of confidence on the part of the buyer.
For me, Sal is a honest person and Spyderco is a honest company, so I have faith in both. That's all... ;)

Hi Kgriggs8,

I'm somewhat surprised that you would question our integrity on the stated quantity, and even be "almost sure there were more than 1200 produced".

And if I were to say your were wrong and there were only 1200 produced as listed, you would say I was wrong or lying (those are the only choices, right?).

ssssoooooo......

You are wrong.

There were only 1200 produced.

I would not call you a liar. I didn't really mean that at all. What I meant was, I was under the impression that only 1200 were made but I have seen so many of them just at local gun shows that I was almost certain that more than 1200 were made. I figuired that if I have personally seen about 20 of them just in the NE part of Indiana, there must be a lot more than 1200. Think about how many gunshows there are in all the states. Also, some must have been exported to other countries.

Sal, if you say that only 1200 were made, I believe you. I shouldn't have phrased it the way I said it. I knew after I typed it that it sounded kind of bad but I didn't mean for it to sound like a conspiracy theory.:D

If ever there was a knife person that I would trust, it would be Sal. He is a straight shooter all the way. I guess I have a habit of putting my foot in my mouth and looking like a fool.:foot:

It just seemed like maybe something happened that caused there to be more than the original 1200 to be made. Clearly I was wrong. I didn't mean to call Sal's word into question. I thought maybe some had changed rather than think that there was something evil going on.
