I have been looking at several "Rambo" type knives on the Web as of late. After looking at the quality of some of the makers like Martin knives and others I wonder to myself are these blades truly practical in the situation for which they are intended or are they just ego candy? What do ya'll think?

Hang on there guys...

Can you define "Rambo knives" by a feature set?

Are we talking bowies with sawbacks or all large knives or hollow handle knives or all of the above?

There are plenty of ways a knife like this could be practical. It would make a decent fighting knife *assuming good materials* and it would work just fine as a survival knife.

The one from rambo 4 would be even more practical as a general survival knife

of course, there are better knives for any given task

The following is my opinion, and is not intended as an insult to anyone on this forum:

A lot of "knife guys" are going to dislike anything with a sawback. A lot of those same guys will dislike anything even vaguely associated with Rambo.

I think is has something to do with not wanting to be associated with all the Rambo-wannabes that started carrying large sawback knives after those movies came out, or they may have been soured by all the low-quality large sawback knives that have surfaced since those movies.

This has nothing to do with the practicality of these particular knives, some of which are offered in various steels and various configurations (including optional sawback).

The bottom line is this: if you have a use for a knife of this type, the price is within your budget, and you like these knives, it doesn't matter what the internet experts have to say about it.

I just personally find sawbacks and storage handles to be useless.

Indeed they are - as long as you realize the situation for which they are intended is a testosterone fantasy movie. They are great for looking bad @ss on a movie set. Outside of that intended situation, they are less practical than a screen door on a submarine.

Well I think those are cool knives and if those knives are made by someone like Lile,V Neeley,Farid,Gil Hibben than the knife will never fail you ! well at least no more than any other knife. Some people don't like so called Rambo knives because they just don't know enough about them. Some don't like them because they are too expensive and they must hate them because they can't afford them anyways ,so that's how they justifying no purchase by trash talking them :-)
Some just don't like them period.
But I say this. If you like Rambo knives and can afford one GO FOR IT ! If you can bring your self to actually use one great ! If you have the real deal from one of those makers I did mention above than the knife is no joke and will serve you like any other knife!
Hell there is a video on internet by guy who made Hallow handle knife and did pull ups on it hanging by the handle and the knife did just fine ! What more u need?

Me myself I love the design of Rambo knives I'll save some money and have one of those gentlemens above to make one in full tank for me just for peace of mind :D why ? because I like it and I don't think the knife is any less practical than any other knife out there. In D2,CPM D2, CPM3v, CPM154 or any other great steel it must be great knife.

There is a certain satisfaction when you are on a camping trip and say,"Check this out" and pull a Rambo knife from your backpack and then twist open the storage handle revealing the presence of some huge joints whereupon you strike a match against the blade and proceed to get everyone high; other than that a Mora Companion is slightly more reasonable.
