Are "Rambo" type knives practical?

Actually, one time :
All I had was my Rambo blade (authentic movie quality) when the fire started. I took a breath through the nose and somewhere in the back of my mind a sudden alarm was raised. I double checked the front yard and to my relief : no Vietcong. That's when I threw myself into action and run threw the house towards the back door. I knew how charlie played his game, he was waiting for me..... Well he was gonna get me.....
The ancient dragon teeth protruding from the spine of my powerful blade made quick work of the fleshy material between the top of a man's skull ...... And the soles of his shoes.....
Bullet impacts are having no effect on my pure rage filled body. The blade I wield mercilessly seems to sharpen itself upon the very cleave of my deathblows .......
Whence the battle subsided I resolved to construct a shelter amidst the bodies, felling whole tries in single swipes of this powerful blade. The hidden container inside the grip of my palm keeping no less than one mile of paracord, an 18 oz sirloin (for emergencies) and indeed, a second rambo knife, inside its very handle....Its very essence, its very..... SHAPE gives me strength unknown to mortal men.

Most practical knife I've ever seen

The hollow handle is a great place to store a few days worth of my blood pressure pills.

If it's a quality 'Rambo' style knife I'd say maybe, but I question the $15 hollow handle ones.

Oh man this was great! :D

There are plenty of ways a knife like this could be practical. It would make a decent fighting knife *assuming good materials* and it would work just fine as a survival knife.

The one from rambo 4 would be even more practical as a general survival knife

of course, there are better knives for any given task

Whoooaaa. I didn't know that there were such beasts. Gotta rent the movies and brush up on my Rambo lore.

Yeah - if you use it and you find it meets your needs then heck yeah it's useful. But there are literally hundreds of fixed blade knives that would serve as a general fixed blade outdoorsy "survival" knife. For specialized tasks, crop harvesting, skinning mules, chopping branches, clearing brush, killing things, cooking etc. - You can find knives designed to excel at that one specific task. They won't be as useful for tasks that they were not designed for but you can usually make due. Personally I always have at least two folders in my pocket. And a fixed blade not too far away.

The Rambo knife in particular. I was looking at Martin knives MCE 2 and SURV 9.

Like you said, "ego candy". They are fun to fondle though, just not to use.

The ESEE LS has tinder tabs and a striker under the scales. That way it keeps it's durability. A lot of the bowie style knives that are marketed and sold as a "Rambo" knife aren't as durable because of the lack of tang to make room for the "survival" gear in the handle. If you could find a "Rambo" style knife with good materials, made by a good company and a little more tang than what you usually find that would be really useful.

You should look into the Cold Steel Bushman, that has a hollow handle and it also keeps it's strength. It would hold 3x what a "Rambo" knife could hold. Then you could just cork up or seal up the handle. :)

Sweet. A magic blade. The Rambo version of dungeons and dragons....

felling whole tries in single swipes of this powerful blade

Those damn "tries" breed like rabbits....

In my personal experience, if its a Jimmy Lile First Blood or Mission top quality replica knife, it is basically a childhood wish or memorabilia to own one, since during that time we couldnt afford to get the real one...and neither can we afford it now..lol. So having a good replica, its more of a sentimental value. As far as practical, im sure it can come in handy depending on the situation.

There practical if 3 Conditions are met.
1. You legally carry it.
2. You carry it without any undo problems stemming from carrying it.
3. Conditions 1 and 2 are met and you still choose to carry it.
Then yes its practical.

Hey, if it weren't for 2, there wouldn't have been a movie, and hence, no Rambo knives.

I have used the sawback on my FB to trim branches that would have otherwise rubbed a hole in my nice new Coleman shelter. So not a complete waste of time, but just not useful all that often.
