Are randall knives still?

In the beginning Randall did have a one man shop, and he continued to fashion all of his knives personally until sometime after the beginning of WWII.

Handmade/Custom vs. Production?

In my opinion this is purely academic, regardless of what label you want to attach to their process they still have almost 60+ years of collective experience in quality and knife design. And there are countless RM knives that have been field tested all over the world since W.W.II in every application known to man. Every single Randall Made Knife has that historical pedigree behind it.

I can't say I know for sure, but how many other "Cutom" knife makers have been doing this as long with such field success?

Cheers.

Judging from my limited experience in handling Randall knives, I'd say that they have much "soul" - even though they might be considered "semi-custom" or whatever. They are timeless classics and if I were to buy one, I'd definitely don't care who made it as long as it is at Randall's company premises.

not even remotely close to semi-production, boys.

best custom blades in the world, period.

whoops, i'm biased. :D

I find you can find brand new ones at many shows, for slightly under or equal to the price from Randall without the 4 year wait. I just bought a #21 and it was at a decent price. Brand new and beautiful

Some stores carry Randalls, and although you will have to pay a bit more to get one from a store, you can buy brand new Randalls without a four year wait.

Besides the excellent construction quality, I like the traditional, proven designs of the Randalls. I'll take a knife with a real guard and leather handle any day over the modern, cut from one piece of steel knives with tiny guards and ugly finishes. I won't argue with those that prefer Striders and Busses, but I like Randalls a whole lot better.

Randall Knives are worth every dime spent and then some. All of the comments from "soul" to "refined" are true, IMO.

Gary is the "right stuff". His crew are also of the "right stuff" and that spirit lives in every piece.

(advertisment: for those in Colorado, Spyderco's factory outlet is the Colorado dealer for Randall Knives. Prices are very close to Randalls suggested, and we're usually 90 days out from delivery)

I've owned several Custom Knives by quite famous knife makers. I don't think any were superior to my Randall's in real world function (except for one by James Porter that I believe to be the best designed knife ever made). Even though they are made by several people they are entirely hand made without jigs. And those several people are all master knife makers in their own right. I see Randalls as "Custom" knives made through a collaboration of master knife makers. Several Custom Knife makers have collaborated, with one making the blade, one the scales, one doing the engraving etc.etc. But they are still "Custom" knives. Randall's are the real deal in working knives and they have a "balance" to the steel used. Great sharpness retention, easy sharpening, toughness. Very hard to beat a Randall as a user. Just my opinion. Best regards and have a great day.
