Are RTAKs really that bad?

Well, there are those that think we are a**holes, but they're not our customers ;)

mneedham,

i also live in up-state,NY.i live outside syracuse and am listening to the storm outside my window rite now.

i had the rtak-2 with serrations.i took it camping for the first time and used it for camping chores.i must have hit a knot and the edge actually bent.imagine if you layed it on ots side and hit the blade with a ball peen hammer...thats what it looked like.the serrations also chipped out that day and it was my first time using it.

i called ontario and they took great care of me and sent me a new one awesome customer service.i figured that it just wasnt made for thick hard woods and havnt got a chance to use my new one.

it is one of my favorite knives along with my rat-3 and i own some really expensive brands .these rats are great.they just have their limitations.

im looking foreward to using it this summer as a machette/trail maker/brush clearer

Rat, I can say I bought a rtak when they 1st came out and loved it. I still own it and it has seen some use. Good product, I may buy the RTAK II eventually.

Nothern1,

Thanks for the info. Once I heard that RTAK was suspect, I figured I would go out and trash it! I took into the woods and beat it up, but it didn't fail and I started liking it.... Stay warm.

northern1,

By all means use the RTAK. If you break it, we'll get you another one. The thin edge was not designed for real hard woods but we still tell everyone to use them for whatever they need.

Your original one was probably one of those that had a bad heat treat. We had several of those that broke and bent. The heat treat issue was fixed a long time ago so use your RTAK!
