Are SOG Penatgons still made of 440A or have they upgraded?

Year ago I fell in love with the SOG Pentagon as a boot knife but I didn't care for the pathetic 440 stainless blade but reently I have read several differetn ad copies that indicate that they are using a different steel in this long time SOG classic.

What's the scoop?

That's what I have heard as well.I'd buy another Pentagon if they were AUS6(or 8) and start carrying it again now that I live in a cold climate and wear boots everyday.

I have been trying for a Pentagon for some time. They arrive at the local shop and are gone in a jiffy.

AUS-6, same as 440A. AUS-8, same as 440C.

So if you don't like 440 series steel all you will be getting is a Pentagon with steel called something else, but in reality the same.

Last I checked the Pentagon was AUS-6/440A.

Could you suggest a "pre-order" with the store owner? Say, paying half ahead of time, and half when it arrives? It's a win-win for both of you. He gets your money early and you get a guarranteed Pentagon when they show up. They disappear for a reason: they're nice knives.

Amazing. The knife community in Botswana is more appreciative of the Pentagon than many here in the United States.

Sounds a great idea. Have a great relationship with the shop. Next time I am in South Africa I will do that. The office has just done a U-turn and banned knives (weapons) so I can't have it delivered.

Chris,
I have a SOG Tech I, and I would like to get the specifications for it. I have looked all over the web and I haven't been able to come up with anything. On the blade it has the letter S over SEKI-JAPAN stamped on it. I bought it back in the early 90's. It's still in the box, I never used it. Can you help?

That's too bad, that stuff is fine for turbine blades but absolute crapola for knife blades.

If I could find someone who could grind spyder serrations after the fact without ruining the heat treatment I would take a stab at making my own version or even modifying an existing knife of similar size and better steel.

I must say I haven't come across SOG Pentagons in South Africa yet - mind you, I havent spent much time home the last decade anyway.

I managed to cautiously pick up a couple of different SOG models on EBay, including the Pentagon - for a decent price most of the time. Have a look there - takes 7-21 days for delivery.

Cheers!
