Are spears illegal to carry in Arizona

If it was a legit spear of Leonidas that would stay in a box never to see the light of day this is a replica of the spear of Leonidas from assassins creed odyssey

Carrying a spear in a rural area might not raise any eyebrows (pig hunting, protection from feral dogs, etc), but if you're carrying a spear in an urban environment, don't be surprised if you encounter some members of law enforcement.

At best, maybe such an encounter will be friendly. At worst, they might come at you with guns drawn, and one wrong move by you, or misinterpreted by them, and you could end up being a story on the evening news "A man armed with a spear was shot and killed by police today in downtown...".

I won't presume to speak for members of law enforcement (there are several here on this forum, current and retired), but I would imagine that if a cop/deputy received a call over the radio of a guy carrying a spear in public, that they probably aren't going to be thinking "the curator of an African artifacts museum", or "a guy on his way to a costume part", they're probably thinking "possible 5150 (mentally ill person)", or worse, "mentally ill person armed with a deadly throwing weapon".

Everyone has a phone, and it's real easy to call 911 and report "A man carrying a SPEAR". Some people might find the sight of a guy walking around in public with a spear to be downright unnerving. And these days, people are not the least bit reluctant to call the cops on people for the slightest reason (think "Karen's"). And when they call, they aren't likely to say "But he looks like a very nice, harmless, law-abiding young man"

And then there's this, it's my understanding that a lot of people carry firearms in Arizona. In such an environment, I don't think it would be a good idea to walk around in public carrying what most people would consider a very strange weapon IN YOUR HAND. That sounds like something that could easily lead to a misunderstanding that could get you shot.

Just some friendly advice. Welcome to Bladeforums :).
Yeah I get that it’s not the most normal of weapons to carry but I wouldn’t be holding it either wear it on my hip like a normal sword or on my back like in the game not touching it unless absolutely necessary

is there a reason you can't just get a gun? a 22in spear is not long enough to use as a walking stick, so it seems the only reason to walk around with one is social intimidation. That sort of thing will get you shot by someone who thought to carry a pistol on their hip.

I would also question the stability of a video game replica. I too love the idea of getting a piece from a fun game, but have learned in the past that most are little more than wall hangers. If it IS worthy of combat, then it is probably a pretty penny, and at that point you can go and buy yourself a pistol.

I had a friend who liked to walk around the bars with his katana. He thought it would be an awesome self defense weapon. His ass got lit up when he refused to hand it over to the drunk kid who wanted to mug him. He survived, but the cops basically laughed at him and said "Yeah, the sword was legal to carry, but what did you expect?"

Did you get this information from a wed site if you did please send a link
no legal limit in Arizona for blade size, knife, machete, spear, whatever, once you turn of age………till age 21 it’s a pocketknife for you legally, pocketknife being a non assisted, manual opening knife by statute.

Are you in Tucson? My sister told me that place was getting strange...

Getting strange? Always has been. A few months ago some guy attacked his girlfriend with a machete near Alvernon and Glenn, and not long after that there was a guy walking up and down Dodge with an ax. Myself, I got jumped and stabbed right by Catalina HS on Dodge. Yes, all of these are near the infamous Grant and Alvernon intersection, where, up until last month, I had lived for ~15 years. Cops had to shoot and kill a guy (taser was ineffective) a few years ago at the Circle K there (now closed) for waving a knife around and threatening people (including stopping cars to do so). I myself had to call the cops on a tweaker who was fighting invisible flying pixies with a dagger in front of my place of employment.

I've seen all kinds of crazy shit. Nobody carrying a spear though. That'd be unbelievably stupid to do, even if it isn't illegal. If a citizen doesn't shoot the guy, a cop will (even if he's in a wheelchair, apparently).

i understand what your saying normal people if they wanted to carry a weapon would be a handgun or a knife but if its legal for me to carry i wouldn't really care what people think of me i go through life that way anyways if you think that im crazy then cool thats your opinion if its a fact then i wont argue with the truth
Much like you, I knew everything when I was 18. But three Drill Instructors and life in the Corps showed me different. Your time will come too, count on it.

i wouldn't be running around weaving it like a maniac it would be on my person where i can access it if needed

im not claiming i know anything im just trying to find out what the laws are for spears, if i knew better and had training then i would know the answer im not joining the army for training or answers im just trying to be a citizen having rights to defend myself if needed and since im not old enough to carry a handgun only rifle and shotgun for hunting purposes im just trying to have the best weapon i see fit for myself since knife laws for me are still very limited

I just noticed this spear is supposed to be 22 inches long. Why would you want to carry it anywhere except to and from your car if you're moving? You can't even lean on it like you would a staff which might actually make a little sense.
tokerblue provided you a link to a summary of the Arizona code, and ferider advised asking the sheriff. What more do you expect people to know about carrying spears?

its the best thing in my opinion for a weapon due to laws and limited options for me im not allowed to have guns on me unless its for hunting but i am allowed to carry certain knifes since im not 21 so i have some power of what i can carry and what i cant

I don't know the legality of spears in Arizona, but after my Tempe trident debacle, I wouldn't chance it.

The law is very clear……you can carry a pocket knife

In Arizona, anyone at least 21 years old can own, buy, sell, trade, or carry any any type and any length of knife statewide. But persons under 21 years old may own and carry only pocket knives. While Arizona law does not specifically define "pocket knife," law enforcement, for practical purposes, generally interprets the term to mean folding knives that have to be pulled open manually. This would most likely mean, then, that gravity or centrifugal-force knives and automatic knives like switchblades would be unlawful for ownership and carry for anyone under the age of 21.

I would think having a ancient Roman weapon seems worse then a game remake
Look man, if you want to walk down the street wearing a prop from a video game like the biggest neckbeard in history, that's on you. I just think maybe that you should stop, take a second, and ask yourself why everyone is telling you it's a bad idea. Listen to us. We are old and wise and not virgins. Your future self will thank you. And us.
