Are spyderco knives overpriced?

The fit and finish of ALL Taiwan made Spyderco knives are superb. But the price point is too high for an imported knife. I'm not saying they lack quality, I just can't justify spending the $$ for something not made on the USA. Why can't the Taiwan made models be made here? Is gladly pay the $$ then.

The handle color is secondary. What you're really getting with sprint runs is a different steel and a limited production knife. They really aren't that expensive from spyderco either. The prices get jacked up on the secondary market and by certain dealers because of the exclusivity.

Ok so lets say you look at a "sprint run" right? What's the difference between that and the original? Lets say different color handle but what is it really? Exactly that a different color handle. So basically your paying more for something that has no real difference other than the right to be called a "sprint run"

You're not just paying for a different color but an upgrade in steel as well. The crazy prices we see are the secondary market prices when these sprint limited editions are long sold out. Let me give you price examples, the standard S30v Millie is $145, sprint in Cruwear was $145, XHP was $165, some of these steels are more expensive. Now that their sold out, they command a higher price because of rarity but Spyderco did not overprice them from the beginning. The CTS204P PM2 was $140 from the dealer, and now go as high as $300. Guess what, WE are making these prices what they are. The standard PM2 is around $120, again, they are charging for how much the steel costs.

Check out the Mule team, where can you get steels like S110v and K390 for well under $100? I just purchased a S110v, unique diamond pattern G10 Native5 direct from them JUST TODAY for $150 shipped, no custom or production maker can match that with the steel you get price wise. The standard version in $120... For $30 more, you get S110v and a unique G10 pattern along with it being a "Forum knife".

No I don't think they are. But if you think the price is to high for you to pay then don't buy it! Really simple.

I do not own many Spyderco's, only the Szabo currently. But the ones made in Taiwan I have owned, Szabo included, have had the best fit/finish of any knives I own, and I guess that cost.

LOL

Sage 2, Gayle Bradley, Southard, Domino........show knives with comparable materials and fit and finish that are made elsewhere and cost less. Please try.

How about Zero Tolerence? The 0801 can easily compete with the domino and southard, not to mention the up and coming 0562. The 0770CF can compete with the Gayle Bradley as well. There, I "tried", and yes, I realize they don't cost less, but they're US produced. Just to clarify, I love spyderco knives, and I don't think they are over priced. :)

Why because you said so? The problem is with your choices and what you want to spend your money on and not Spyderco. Sal has said that he didn't begin production In Taiwan to save money but because they are very capable knife makers. Golden facility is expanding and will soon accommodate more models I'm looking forward to those as well. It may be overpriced to you because of your choice to set a limit on how much a foreign made product should be but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are overpricing them as compared to the rest of their lineup.

Thank you for giving the best response regarding that so far that makes complete sense to me now (even though I still wouldn't pay extra) and to end that discussion regarding "sprint runs" I understand there are people out there willing to pay that much IM not one of them it's an opinion, sorry if you don't like but that's my opinion

Hi Kirby, all true but in the end ZT is owned by a Japanese company using foreign steel point being you're gonna have to pick your poison if you choose to buy American and that goes with most everything we own.

Bro thats what we've all been saying all along.

And just to clarify we don't have a problem with you not liking / not wanting to own / not understanding the point of a sprint run, like you said its your opinion and your just as entitled to it as we are to our opinions.

Just to clarify, I don't think that Taiwan made models are overpriced due to fit and finish and materials. My issue is with the country they are made in. I do believe that the cost for the Southard, Tuff, Domino etc... is competitive. I just can't wrap my head around the reasons they are produced overseas. I know the quality can be duplicated in Golden, Co.

They already have trouble keeping up with demand in golden , i doubt they could produce those models also withought huge expansion.

Because, if they were produced here they would be at a price point similar to CRK. So you can get the same fit and finish, same materials, but 200$ less by getting a taiwan made Spyderco knife.

I know you and everyone else have but things didnt clarify for me until I saw examples of prices and how secondary markets bump up the price, it was never the issue of why would anybody pay that much, it was more of the issue of grasping the concept of why I knife would be priced so much more higher than the original

I don't care how capable the makers are in Taiwan. Are they better than the makers here? It wouldn't be as big of an issue if all of the knives were made here or all of them were made in Taiwan. To me it's about nothing but to save money. You can't tell me that Taiwan is the only place that is capable of meeting spyderco standards.

Hobbyists and collectors get a kick out of the unique steels and rarity but the standard models are perfectly sufficient and is the foundation where these sprint knives get their reputation from. Good for you, save your money unlike me :o

Both Golden and Taiwan make great knives. Golden is expanding and will serve you better in the future. The Golden facility is much older than the very recent Taiwan facility that has newer machinery. Take it or leave it.

Stays sharp, I will reply in the morning, I don't have a coherent reply at the moment. :o

To me it's about nothing but to save money. you're right I suppose, they save money. but in turn they're able to put lower prices on their products. End result is a product with the same quality and lower prices. You can't tell me that Taiwan is the only place that is capable of meeting spyderco standards. absolutely not! They do it quite well in Golden Colorado.

Answer in bold. :)

But my question still remains- why Taiwan? I understand the Golden plant is expanding, but there had to be several capable makers between Colorado and Taiwan.

I don't know - but I think if there was a more capable manufacturer that could produce the same fit and finish at the same price, Sal would have chosen them. With that being said, I don't think it was a question of "why Taiwan?" But of "why not Taiwan?".
