Are Spyderco Knives the Best

I'm sure Spyderco knives are good, but are
they the best. I'd prefer to go with buying the best for utility.

"Best" is a pretty broad term. They are mighty good knives, and Sal is a fine man, but everyone defines perfection differently. If there were a definitive answer to this question, this wouldn't be such a fascinating hobby.

By the way, welcome to the forum. You can learn a lot from the guys who hang out here.

I own a lot of knives, varying in price from under 50 to over 300 dollars. The ones I find myself carrying on a daily basis are a Gunting, a micarta Dyad, and a Bill Moran Featherweight with a Normark Concealex sheath. Those these are often replaced with whatever's newest and coolest, I always end up with some combination of these three. Are Spydercos the best? I think when you take into account quality of design and construction, pricing, availability, and the integrity of the company, they are the best factory knives out there. No commercial interest on my part, merely a satisfied customer.

Ddimaqui, I own three Spydies, and I can't see myself going without one, even though there are other great quality knives around (I just bought a D2 Sifu SE, for ex.). The opening hole is is my favored one-hander device, and Spydie quality is tops.

Are they the "best?" They're among the best, and the "best" if you are intent on believing it!

JUST GET SOME!!

In my humble opinion SPYDERCO goal is that they make very decent knives in reasonable price. More, they make knives for very wide range of applications - from gentleman's knives to heavy duty ones. Even more - they are continuously ready to try out a lot of innovative ideas despite some of them seem pretty crazy at first look.

Are their knives the best? Hmmm, do the best knives exist at all?
Another quite important thing, for me at least. It is no sense to evaluate knife manufacturing companies which is better. Much more I like to evaluate particular knives - which knife or which future I like more or less

I don't know that anyone can claim the title of "best". But Spyderco certainly ranks among the top.

Paul

I would be very reluctant to call any brand THE BEST but...
I believe Spyderco has the best one-hand opening method (the round hole beats any stud or non-round hole I have ever used. I even prefer it over the Carson flipper).

Spydies are also THE SHARPEST knives I have ever seen fresh out of the box.

I don't know about best. But for the money, they are AWFULLY hard to beat. I always have at least one on my person.
Matt

well, the customer satisfaction seems to
indicate a good company. i saw the gunting in a magazine, but i don't see it on the site. only the trainer is advertised. is the gunting discontinued? if not where can i get one.

You're definately asking the wrong crew. You might as well ask a BMW salesman if BMWs are the best cars. Yes, Spydercos are really, really great knives. If you want a wider variety of opinions ask for them on the blade discussion forum. IN MY opinion, I will say that a couple other production (not custom, like Randall) companies are as good as BUT NOT BETTER THAN Spyderco. These would include; Masters of Defense, William Henry, K-BAR, CRKT. I'm not going to post a lengthy message say why I feel all of these companies are top-notch, but you can email me if you want reason why I feel like I do. OR you can just do what I do. Hang out on the forums and read, read, and read!!!

Can't answer that, give Spyderco the money to make a pocket knife in the price range of a Sebenza, and yes they would make the best 'affordable' (only just
wink.gif
) pocket knife. However, are they the best? No, are they the best for what they charge? Yes IMHO.

Everytime it comes round to wanting a new knife, Spyderco are always my first choice. Why? Because they have the features I want in an everyday knife. The company has the BEST customer service and the BEST QC I have ever seen without going for a $300+ product. The range uses the best materials for the money and produces working pieces first. They even offer custom collaberations so we can have nice looking blades as well
wink.gif
. Or rather NICER looking blades! Compared to makers like BM, Spyderco are in a class all their own.

IMHO the industry is split like this.

Best cheap maker 1. CRK&T/ Camillus
Best Mid range maker 1. Spyderco
Best Mid/ Upper maker 1. MOD/Microtech
Best upper maker 1. CRK

This is based upon MY experiences with QC, value, performance and support.

Confusing?

I look at the total package when considering which is the best. More important than just blade quality, I appreciate the way Mr. Glesser is open to the needs of the end line user. In another thread their company asks us which knives we would like to keep and which to retire. People wanted carbon fiber Civilians and they made them. Gray Matriarchs were available to forum members. If forum members have any ideas, they are listened to. I appreciate also that the owner of the company talks to us on two different forums. Above all, Spyderco is also interested in keeping us happy. They stand by their warranties. That is why I buy Spyderco products. I don't work for Spyderco but I sure wish I did.

It may be a bit subtle, but I think you should pay attention to the manner in which most of the answers qualified things. From my limited experience, the regulars on the Spyderco forums are the most level-headed, open-minded company forumites around. On a couple/3 other forums, the participants are for the most part extremely zealous. They are such determined fans of the company/knives they like, that they are willing to ignore significant factors such as quality/ergonomics, even appearance, and blindly swear up and down nothing under the sun touches their favorites.

Here, as you saw, you see great customer satisfaction, but a willingness to question/second guess the company and different designs.

One good example -- no less respected a name than Joe Talmadge, is an extremely strong advocate of the Calypso Jr. model. He has repeatedly posted that there is no other manufactured knife like it/in its class for cutting. That is coming from a man who is widely experienced, has owned the most expensive productions.

I think one thing can be said very strongly -- Spyderco has the most knives that are clearly engineered for either specific purposes or generic utility of any company. While they often look rather different than their competition, if you look closely, read what you can, and think about the design, I think you'll discover that Spydercos are in a class by themselves.

well - best - best what? best fighting knife? well i like my SIFU better than the Gunting or the Matriarch (just a bigger knife, more like a machete thana knife) but i also own a Gunting and a Matriarch, they are good too, especially if you live in an area were you cant have a 5.5" knife - i wouldnt feel at a disadvantage with any of them. utility? well the delica is probably the best, at least its the one i carry most for that purpose. well made, inexpensive, handy.

stand behind the product? spyderco (sal) is the man here - never seen a problem on this forum he didnt take care of - pretty cool that the president of a company takes time to talk with us about things. you dont see that much anymore.

and as far as quality, i have several knives (REKAT, emerson, microtech, etc) and my Guntings quality is right up there with my minisocom, a $190 knife. i was comparing the 2 earlier this evening, and they match up well, i didnt see any differnce in quality, and micro is supposedly so great. the spydie is at least an equal, IMHO.

in other words try 1, you wont be sorry. i honestly cant say any other brand thats not a custom of course, that is any better quality, and many, IMHO, are not as good, and are more expensive to boot

SIFU

If you're asking about just quality, there are probably better makers out there... CRK, William Henry, some would say Microtech. However, their knives are more expensive.

Spyderco has other things going for it though: A wide variety of designs and materials, great customer service, relatively low prices, willingness to listen to ELUs, proprietary mechanisms, etc..

I must admit, you're going to get biased opinions here. But, check out this thread in the General forum about backup folders for backpacking: here. So many people recommend Spyderco knives because they're "users". You can actually use their knives for real chores, unlike a lot of cool looking tactical folders out there.

Hi Ddmaqui. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I'd say Spyderco is good, and we try hard to be good.

"Best" changes from day to day and race to race.

I have not made any attempt to collect based on brand. I buy knives that work well, feel good in my hand, and look attractive. Yet, when I tote up what I currently own I find that my collection includes one or two of a lot of brands (CRK, Kershaw, REKAT, Emerson, AG Russell), six Benchmades, and twelve Spydercos!

SpyderCo is the best for thier price. Simply put, nothing more needs to be said.

I own:
(3 spyderco knives)
-Delica, FRN, plain($80)
-Ladybug, black($35)
-Cricket, Almite, serrated($100)
Ruko 4" skinner($50)
6" survival knife($60-80)
5" skinner, my grandfather's, given to me(Pakistan Steel)
4" Scorpion2($40)
5" Bootknife($50)
2.5' sword($80)
3.75" RiverTrail, brass handle, wood inlay

Getting a Micotech Lightfoot LCC-DA in about October, when I have the cash for it. It's going to be $510 after taxes.

I have a broad array of knives, and abuse them all. I go through a multi-tool in about 8months to 1yr for example.

SpyderCo may not be the best overall, but thier prices for the quality bring them up in ranking. Customer service keeps them up.

Syderco users and forum members all use other brands, we even ask about other one IN the SPYDERCO forum... ok, spydieland, asking about Columbia River knives... thats normal.

Everyone has different tastes and Sal listens to the forum members and values our opinion.
