Are Steel Liners Really That Important?

Liners are unnecessary. I've done lots of "hard use", abuse, stupid stuff with linerless frn Spydercos to no ill effect.

The knives I carry are for duty use as well as home EDC (to remain familiar in case of an emergency on duty). Will liner-less knives be a bad idea for duty use?

Really depends on the knife itself. If it's for hard use, I'd probably go with liners if it's FRN. G10, aluminum, titanium are fine by themselves from everything I've seen.

Why not post some of the knives you're thinking about and get feedback on them specifically, since the answer to your question can change quite a bit depending on the knife.

It'd be nice to have a knife designer chime in but I'm sure every knife design is different. Scale thickness, scale width, scale length, scale material, backspacer, number of standoffs and there size, pivot size and probably a lot more things I'm unaware of.
